One of the many reasons behind Elden Ring’s popularity and success is its plethora of weapon classes, each of which encompasses a variety of different weapons. Elden Ring boasts over 300 unique weapons, and when combined with various Ashes of War and Infusions, players experience an open-world fantasy game with replayability never seen before in a Soulsborne title.

While introducing over 300 weapons, FromSoft was conscious of a key challenge players would face: obtaining upgrade materials. Almost every weapon requires either Smithing Stones or Somber Smithing Stones for leveling up. Players can acquire these upgrade materials by exploring caves, defeating enemies, purchasing them from merchants, and more. Unfortunately, these resources are available in limited quantities. To address this issue, FromSoft has introduced a new type of item called the Bell Bearing, allowing players to purchase an unlimited supply of certain items.

Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing [1] (Smithing Stones 1 & 2)

Elden Ring Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel

The first Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is locked behind the Crystallian boss fight in Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel. To reach this cave, head northeast from the Gate Town North site of grace. Run along the bottom of the cliff to find the entrance to the tunnel. The boss fight is located at the bottom level of the cave.

After progressing through the entire dungeon, players will find themselves at the entrance to the Crystallian boss. These enemies are infamous for their high damage negation, but that is removed once they are stance broken. Using blunt weapons with high stance damage makes the Crystallian boss fight a piece of cake. Once defeated, players are rewarded with the Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing 1, allowing them an unlimited number of Smithing Stones 1 and 2.

Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing [2] 2 (Smithing Stones 3 & 4)

Elden Ring Sealed Tunnel

The second Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is located inside the Sealed Tunnel in Altus Plateau. Fortunately, players don’t need to fight any boss to collect the second Bell Bearing. To find the Sealed Tunnel cave, head to the lake southeast from the Outer Wall Phantom Tree site of grace and enter the tunnel at the far end of the lake. The entrance to the cave is past a group of land squirts.

As its name might suggest, the Sealed Tunnel has a few invisible walls. From the Sealed Tunnel site of grace, go right to find an odd-looking wall. Attack or roll into it to remove the wall. Then, follow the path straight and go down the stairs to find a group of barrels and carts. Go past them to find the chest containing the Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing 2.

Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing [3] (Smithing Stones 5 & 6)

The third Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is found in the Zamor Ruins of Mountaintops of the Giants. After beating Morgott and taking the Grand Lift of Rold, players will reach the Mountaintops of the Giants. The Zamor Ruins are right in front of the Grand Lift of Rold.

From the Zamor Ruins site of grace, go south to find a flight of stairs. Enter the small room to find the chest with Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing 3.

The fourth and final Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is a reward for defeating the Godskin Duo in Crumbling Farum Azula. This boss encounter is one of the non-optional battles in Elden Ring, and is crucial for completing the game. All players will obtain Smithing Stone Bell Bearing 4 in their playthrough.

To locate the Godskin Duo fight, descend to the platforms north of the Tempest-Facing Balcony site of grace and continue heading northwest to find the Dragon Temple site of grace. The boss is just a little ways west of the grace site, past two Banished Knights.

Godskin Apostle and Noble have a low resistance to Sleep. Using one Sleep pot is enough to induce sleep for a few minutes.

All Somber Smithing Stone Bell Bearing Locations

Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [1] (Somber Smithing Stones 1 & 2)

The first Somber Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is obtained by defeating the Fallingstar Beast boss in Caelid’s Sellia Crystal Tunnel. Players can access this cave early in the game by using the teleporter chest trap in Limgrave’s Dragon-burnt Ruins.

To reach the boss, jump to the roof of the shack where the trapped chest spawns you and sprint and jump to the left. Follow the path to find a ladder going up, but beware of the stonedigger waiting for you. After taking the ladder, find another shack with a Kindred of Rot on top. There's a ladder going above on the left side of this shack. Take the ladder, defeat or run past the Kindred of Rot, and kick a ladder for a shortcut to reach the top of the shack where you spawned. Continue following the path, pass a few more Kindred of Rot enemies, and find the entrance to the Fallingstar Beast. Defeat it to claim the Somber Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing 1.

Exploring the Sellia Crystal Tunnel can be troublesome due to Kindred of Rot enemies. It is recommended to visit this cave only after reaching level 40 or above. Even if players make it to the boss's room, they might face challenges if under-leveled, risking death in just a few hits.

Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [2] (Somber Smithing Stones 3 & 4)

The second Somber Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is obtained by defeating the Crystallian Duo boss in Altus Tunnel. To reach the Altus Tunnel, head to the Forest-Spanning Greatbridge site of grace and carefully descend the broken bridge. Then, head south to locate the entrance to Altus Tunnel, marked with a small red entrance icon on the map.

In the Altus tunnel, run past all enemies to find the entrance to the Crystallian Duo boss. When facing any Crystallian enemy, a blunt weapon is your best friend. With a few heavy smacks, both Crystallian enemies should go down and reward you with the Somber Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing 2.

Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [3] (Somber Smithing Stones 5 & 6)

The third Somber Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is found on a dead corpse just in front of the First Church of Marika in the Mountaintops of the Giants. To reach this church, continue heading south from the Freezing Lake site of grace. You can avoid the Borealis the Freezing Fog boss, and continue riding south to reach the First Church of Marika to claim the Somber Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing 3.

Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [4] (Somber Smithing Stones 7 & 8)

Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stone Bell Bearing 4 location

The fourth Somber Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is also relatively easy to obtain, provided you have made it to Crumbling Farum Azula. It is located in front of the Tempest-Facing Balcony site of grace.

After reaching Crumbling Farum Azula, activate the Crumbling Beast Grave grace site, and then run past the dragon to reach Crumbling Beast Grave Depths. From there, head into the hall filled with beastmen and run past them to get to the Tempest-Facing Balcony. The Somber Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing 4 will be ahead of the grace site.

Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [5] (Somber Smithing Stone 9)

The fifth and last Somber Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is found on the path to the Beast Clergyman/Maliketh, The Black Blade boss fight. After unlocking the Beside the Great Bridge site of grace, take the elevator and head down to the room with beastmen. In this room, players will find the Somber Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing 5 on a corpse next to the altar.
