Elden Ring redefined the open-world action RPG genre by blending Soulslike elements with exploration to create a game that both challenged and mystified players. While FromSoftware games have been steadily increasing in popularity over the past several years, Elden Ring solidified the developer's place as one of the best in the business and earned the Game of the Year award at the Game Awards 2022. While Elden Ring is its own unique beast, there are plenty of other PC games that share a lot in common with the title that fans might want to check out.

Although the defining characteristics of Elden Ring are its Soulslike elements, there are a lot of open-world and RPG mechanics that are similar to other titles in the genre. With how many PC games there are to sort through, it can be hard to find one that scratches that particular Elden Ring itch. For PC players who enjoyed certain elements of Elden Ring and are looking to find a new game that features a similar style of gameplay and mechanics, there are a handful of great games to consider.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Prior to the development of Elden Ring, FromSoftware released another award-winning Soulslike in the form of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. While this game is much more linear than Elden Ring and lacks an open world, it hones in on the tough-as-nails combat Soulslikes are known for to deliver tight and satisfying gameplay. This polished combat design was part of the reason Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was the Game Awards 2019's Game of the Year.

Monster Hunter Rise

Part of the awe of Elden Ring's world is encountering and battling larger-than-life enemies while exploring the Lands Between, and for players looking for a similar experience, Monster Hunter Rise might do the trick. The Monster Hunter series is all about taking down massive beasts and using the parts collected from the hunt to upgrade the player's weapons and gear. Although Monster Hunter Rise doesn't have a completely open world, it can still be satisfying to track and defeat monsters across its open zones.

Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen

Capcom's acclaimed open-world action RPG is a great game for recapturing the open-world and fantasy elements of Elden Ring. Despite not having the traditional Soulslike gameplay, the action combat and character-build customization of Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen will be enjoyable for fans of Elden Ring's RPG systems. Another major difference from Elden Ring is Dragon's Dogma's pawn system which allows players to recruit up to three party members that the player can issue orders to during battle.

Diablo 4

For a change of perspective from Elden Ring's third-person over-the-shoulder view, Diablo 4 offers players a top-down take on the open-world action RPG genre. Diablo 4's deep class system can be great for Elden Ring fans who like building different characters and trying out various play styles as the game offers in-depth skill trees for its diverse roster of playable classes. As opposed to Elden Ring's methodical approach to combat encounters, Diablo 4 has players take on hordes of enemies at a time in fast-paced action RPG gameplay.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Geralt in The Witcher 3

Before games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring made their mark on the open-world RPG genre, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was considered the gold standard. The game still holds up incredibly well today and features a world filled to the brim with content, much like Elden Ring's Land Between. The action combat of The Witcher 3 isn't as complex as Elden Ring's and there aren't as many options for build variety, but the focus on characters, story, and exploration make this game a worthwhile play for any Elden Ring fan.

Elden Ring is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
