Today, Netflix released a trailer for the documentary series Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga, directed by Theo Love and executive produced by Dan Cogan and Liz Garber. Both the director and producers have extensive experience in documentary production.
The documentary series follows a ragtag group of millennials involved in the Wallstreetbets Reddit forum, an online economic force and social justice movement that pumped up GameStop's stock prices to spite Wall Street hedge funds that shorted the stock. This short squeeze cost hedge funds a staggering $19.75 billion in January 2021 alone. In response to the loss, trading platforms restricted stock purchases on GameStop and other companies involved. Netflix described it as, "a viral David vs. Goliath story for the 21st century."
The trailer features interviews with members of r/Wallstreetbets along with snippets from an interview with a hedge fund employee and stock trading TV personality Jim Cramer. Though Elon Musk was not interviewed, his tweets regarding the subject and his impact were covered in the trailer. It appears that the show will explore the online meme culture surrounding the event along with the tangible human and economic elements of the story. Rather than releasing a full-length feature film, the creators have opted for a TV miniseries format.
In addition to the interviews featured in the trailer, the show will feature interviews with top economists, lawmakers, law enforcement, investors, fin-fluencers, and architects of the modern financial system. Love said that while the real-world financial aspects of the story are more serious, he wanted this documentary series to have a light, comedic tone. Based on the production team alone, this documentary is one Netflix subscribers should look forward to.
The dynamic power couple of Cogan and Garbus has produced a number of award-winning works, both together and individually. Cogan has produced multiple Academy Award-winning documentaries and has received three Emmy Awards over his twenty-five years of filmmaking. Garbus has an equivalent pedigree, with two Academy Award Nominations and two Emmy Award wins over a twenty-plus-year career as a producer and director. Their joint production company, Story Syndicate, will be leading the production of Eat The Rich: The GameStop Saga.
Additionally, Love is a seasoned director who has directed and produced documentary films for the last fifteen years. Given the historical significance of the topic and the first-class film crew, this highly anticipated documentary should be a memorable one.
Eat The Rich: The GameStop Saga will be available on September 28th, 2022, on Netflix.
