  • EA Motive's upcoming Iron Man game has the potential to be a fantastic superhero experience, regardless of its approach.
  • It's possible that the Iron Man game may be more linear and cinematic rather than an open-world game, based on EA Motive's previous work.
  • The inclusion of Iron Man's different suits could provide unique gameplay experiences and allow players to experiment with different abilities and weapons. The Hulkbuster suit could offer a bruiser playstyle, especially if the Hulk is a boss in the game.

A while back, EA Motive’s announcement of an Iron Man game was exciting due to it being one of the few new Marvel games on the market aside from Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise and Marvel’s Wolverine. Now, there are a ton of upcoming Marvel games without release windows and they’re probably all attracting world-class talent, EA Motive included. That said, EA Motive surely doesn’t need a Marvel game to get prospective developers interested since this year’s Dead Space remake was already a wonderful success story, but an Iron Man game has all the potential makings of its own terrific superhero experience regardless of how EA Motive decides to approach it.

An open-world Iron Man game would seem like the obvious plan, and yet EA Motive’s previous games insinuate that its Iron Man game may be more linear and cinematic instead. It’ll likely be a while before such details are revealed unless job postings eventually give away some of that information, but it’s easy to speculate what EA Motive could achieve by looking at its most recent work in Dead Space. Isaac Clarke’s penchant for swapping suits is the clearest way that EA Motive could adopt a similar feature in its Iron Man game, for instance, and one suit in particular could drastically change gameplay.

Iron Man’s Hulkbuster Armor is a Must for a Distinct Playstyle

EA Motive’s Iron Man Needs a Stunning Catalog of Gameplay-Affecting Suits

Iron Man as a character can appear fairly bland if Tony Stark isn’t always expressing his ingenuity and creativity with new suits of armor that have different functions, and that’s going to be exceedingly true of an Iron Man game where different suits could provide unique stats, abilities, and weapons for players to experiment with, almost like a specific class or build depending on which suits players prefer.

Sort of like how Star Wars Jedi: Survivor gave Cal Kestis a few new lightsaber stances with their own playstyle in combat, Tony Stark could easily design suits for specific goals and playstyles.

Perhaps one suit has a greater micro-missile capacity, one could reserve more energy for OP unibeam shots, and one could be more resistant to certain elements or status effects. However, one suit could be the most distinct in making Tony a destructive brawler if he was to be able to don the Hulkbuster armor.

EA Motive Has a Heavy Bruiser Build Layup with the Hulkbuster, Especially if the Hulk is a Boss

The Hulkbuster’s namesake comes from him being able to go toe-to-toe with Bruce Banner’s gamma-radiated alter ego while wearing it, and it’s appropriately large and bulky to make that remotely possible. Similar to how Batman dons a heavily armored suit to trade blows with Superman in The Dark Knight Returns, Iron Man’s Hulkbuster is a great way to show that Tony’s intellect and wit are his true superpowers.

The Hulkbuster armor would be neat as its own scripted sequence where Hulk appears as an antagonist and Tony needs to take him down while having it as a suit players can swap to at any time seems more unrealistic due to the idea that players might be indoors or in interiors that wouldn’t accommodate such a massive suit trudging through. Still, being able to clobber enemies in slow movements would be an exciting way to diversify gameplay, particularly after players will likely get to fly around gracefully and attack quickly with an emphasis on maneuverability.
