Koei Tecmo has announced Dynasty Warriors: Origins. The next entry in the Dynasty Warriors franchise is scheduled for release sometime in 2025.

The long-running hack-and-slash series has received nine mainline installments since its humble beginnings in 1997. But the latest such entry is already pushing seven, having been released in early 2018 in the form of the mixed-reviewed Dynasty Warriors 9. The Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires strategy spin-off didn't fare much better in terms of critical acclaim, or lack thereof.

Dynasty Warriors Ditches Numbered Entries For Its 10th Mainline Game

Koei Tecmo is now looking to continue the series with Dynasty Warriors: Origins, which has been announced as part of the latest PlayStation State of Play livestream. The May 30 broadcast included a 79-second reveal trailer comprised of a mixture of gameplay footage and in-engine cinematics. Aside from revealing that the franchise is ditching numbered entries for the time being, the promo also confirmed that Dynasty Warriors: Origins will be developed by Omega Force, a Koei Tecmo subsidiary that was in charge of all the previous mainline installments from the franchise.

The game's premise appears to be fairly similar to those of its many predecessors, with its reveal trailer setting up yet another warlord conflict in ancient China. The video also teases the rise of a "nameless hero," a dark-haired swordsman who appears to be the protagonist of Dynasty Warriors: Origins. But seeing how the franchise itself has a long track record of featuring multiple playable characters, it is likely that this upcoming entry won't limit fans to just a single pair of shoes that they can step into.

The trailer is otherwise jam-packed with action, confirming the return of the series' staple set pieces that pit players against huge armies. The promo ends with a promise that Dynasty Warriors: Origins will launch on the PS5 sometime in 2025. The past mainline Dynasty Warriors games have mostly hit the market in either Q1 or Q4 of their respective release years. Since this upcoming entry is still lacking a concrete release date, a late 2025 launch seems to be more likely than an early 2025 one.

There is currently no indication that Dynasty Warriors: Origins will reach any non-PlayStation platform. Although it's been a while since Sony secured a Dynasty Warriors exclusive, the company's relationship with Koei Tecmo is strong enough for this platform exclusivity not to be particularly surprising. E.g., Koei Tecmo's latest PlayStation-only title was released just a few months back in the form of the critically acclaimed Rise of the Ronin ARPG.

Developed by Omega Force, Dynasty Warriors started life as a Romance of the Three Kingdoms spin-off, with Chinese feudal lords and their retainers once again playing an important role in the series. Its hack and slash combat helped to popularize the Musou game genre and has led to many further spin-off games over the years.
