Though development on Techland's Dying Light 2 has been mostly quiet since it was delayed in January, its current zombie apocalypse survival game Dying Light is continuing to receive new content updates. Dying Light's Hellraid DLC was released this August, and while its reviews have been mixed there is a lot in it for fans to tackle. Now, the developer is bringing back a popular crossover for Halloween.
Last year, Dying Light added Left 4 Dead 2 content paying homage to Valve's zombie shooter, which seems fitting given the Left 4 Dead franchise was a precursor to the kind of high-octane zombie games now seen in the likes of Dying Light. PC players can access the crossover event now, though they should hurry because it ends on October 29 at 7:00 p.m. CET. Dying Light fans on console will have to wait "a few weeks" to access the DLC additions, though the event surrounding it will not be included.
That DLC gives players a few goodies based on Left 4 Dead. William "Bill" Overbeck is a playable model, continuing his stint as a kind of mascot for the series based on his similar appearance in DLC for Behaviour Interactive's Dead by Daylight. Players can also grab a new type of shotgun that utilizes incendiary ammo, as well as a two-handed weapon based on Gnome Chomski - a garden gnome referencing linguist Noam Chomsky that was a popular Easter egg in Left 4 Dead 2.
Beyond receiving that content, PC players can also access an "extremely challenging" horde-based game mode called Viral Rush that features endless waves of zombies. While the event only lasts a few days, not even extending into Halloween, Dying Light players should find it an interesting little distraction for the time being.
That being said, many players will likely find any new content released in Dying Light to just be a "distraction" from the still-uncertain release of Dying Light 2. A Techland employee has confirmed more Dying Light support is planned to follow Hellraid, and that it would be coming from a separate team so as not to affect the sequel's development schedule.
The re-appearance of this Left 4 Dead 2 crossover is particularly timely, as Valve's popular game has seen a resurgence at the tail end of 2020. Valve released a community-created update for the 11-year-old Left 4 Dead 2 in September called The Last Stand, which amassed over 60,000 concurrent players around launch.
Dying Light is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
