Players will make plenty of decisions over the course of an entire Dying Light 2 playthrough. Many of these decisions, even most of them, have very minor impacts on the plot. The majority of the differences aren't in rewards or story, but flavor and role-playing.

That doesn't mean Dying Light 2 is devoid of meaningful decisions. When Hakon takes what appears to be a fatal blow, players will have to decide whether or not to save his life. Be warned, there are very serious spoilers to follow, as what happens with either choice has titanic implications on what happens later.

What Happens If Hakon "Dies"

If Aiden leaves Hakon to perish, he goes silent and players continue the journey as normal. In the immediate aftermath, Aiden will still have to use his elite parkour skills to find the sniper, but it will be without Hakon's help. However, though he is presumed dead, Hakon does end up surviving.

He will be reintroduced at a critical moment during the game later on, but things are problematic from there. Instead of being an ally, he'll ask as a minor antagonist and focus on self-interests. He's a rather compelling villain, so those who want to see this performance from him might be tempted to make this choice.

Most importantly, if Hakon is left to die, it is not possible to get the "best" ending. In fact, while there are a few variations, all of the endings are a type of bad. Lawan will die and the city will be destroyed.

What Happens If Hakon Lives

If Hakon is saved by Aiden, it is possible (though not guaranteed) to get the best ending. In the short term, Hakon will guide Aiden to the sniper and generally try to atone for his lies and attempts to frame innocent people of violent crimes.

With either choice, there will be a long bout of radio silence after escaping from old Villedor. He pops back up and, while he's grateful to Aiden, it will still take some gentle handing to make him summon the heroism he needs to save the city, Lawan, and himself.

Dying Light 2 was released on February 4th, 2022, and is available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
