Melee weapons live such short and sweet lives in Dying Light 2. It's hard to imagine a game that makes players fall in love with a weapon that they know is going to shatter, but the developers at Techland found a way to do it. And they put a system in the game that only makes this love affair more bittersweet.

However, improving weapons isn't immediately obvious and much of the confusion occurs because it isn't immediately possible. It will take some patience and knowledge, but before long Dying Light 2 gamers will be tinkering with weapons to last as long and do as much damage as possible.

Find Or Buy A Weapon With Sockets

Perhaps the biggest problem with learning to upgrade weapons is that weapons that can be upgraded are incredibly rare. Gamers will likely be coming across Dead Island Easter eggs before they get ahold of a weapon that can be improved.

For those white, blue, and even purple weapons that lack sockets, go ahead and use them until they are broken without worrying about what might have been. The only time to worry about better technology is when a weapon with sockets allows it.

Find Or Buy Modifications

Modifications are about are rare as the socketed weapons themselves, so don't be surprised about lacking any when first coming across a superior melee weapon. Like the weapon itself, these modifications must be either found while exploring or purchased outright.

Traders are a rarity at the start, but use the binoculars to locate a couple of windmills. After unlocking them, a trader will be around. Their stock will change, so don't give up hope if they don't start out with any modifications in stock.

Equip Mods From The Inventory Screen

  • Menu > Inventory Tab > Select the Weapon > Press Modify > Choose a Mod

And now it's time to put the two together! The game is kind enough to not require a crafting table, so this can be done at any location. Go to the menu screen and hover over the weapon. On the bottom, there will be a button to modify the equipment (X/Triangle on controllers, C for keyboard users).

Different weapons have different slots, like tips, shafts, and grips. Not every weapon will have all three and modifications can only go in their designated spot. For example, a grip mod can't be tossed onto a tip slot. Enjoy the improved weapon!

Dying Light 2 was released on February 4th, 2022, and is available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
