Highlights

  • Combat in Dying Light 2 is secondary to using parkour, stealth, and exploration. Good weapons are rare and difficult to upgrade.
  • Weapons in the game are categorized by class with common, rare, unique, and legendary tiers. Stats are randomized on dropped weapons.
  • Blunt weapon classes like Knuckledusters, One-Handed Stick, and One-Handed Hammer have different pros and cons for various combat situations.

Combat in Dying Light 2 often takes a back seat to the 3D puzzle of using parkour to move around the map, stealth to avoid enemies, and exploration of the wilderness and abandoned city. In fact, players generally only end up forced into combat when they make a mistake. Because of this, good weapons are hard to find, expensive to buy, and difficult to upgrade. This is doubly true for firearms, but less so for melee weapons.

Dying Light 2: Best Ranged Weapons, Ranked

Dying Light 2 doesn't really encourage the player to use ranged weapons, but if they need one just in case, these are the best options.

With less focus given to weapons and combat, the range and variety of weapons in Dying Light 2 is simplified. All weapons belong to a class. Within that class, there are common, uncommon, rare, unique, artifact, and legendary tier weapons. Weapon variations are only visual, and stats are randomized across every weapon found. Dropped weapons also have a chance to have additional effects such as toxic, bleeding, and stun. Once acquired, players can equip mods to their weapons to further enhance and personalize them.

This list will cover all the blunt weapon classes in the game and explain their pros, cons, and best use cases. It doesn’t include special weapons given to players who purchased specific DLC, or similar. The list below is only going to cover weapons available in the base game.

7 Knuckledusters

Short Range Fast Attack Weapons

Knuckledusters Dying Light 2

Pros

Cons

Best Use

Fast attack rate

Very close range

Quick single-target takedowns

Good damage

Limited block

Kuckledusters can be tough to find in Dying Light 2. They do not seem to drop very often as loot, and vendors very rarely stock even uncommon versions. That being said, it can be worth trying to find some Knuckledusters, as they are very good at dropping a single target very quickly.

Dying Light 2's blueprints allow players to craft various tools to help with survival. Here's which blueprints should receive an upgrade first.

However, when taking on groups of enemies, Knuckledusters are difficult to block multiple incoming attacks with. This weapon is best used from stealth, and on a static target. Some games have pretty tough zombie enemies, and this is one of them.

6 One-Handed Stick

Fast Attack Blunt Damage

One-Handed Stick Dying Light 2

Pros

Cons

Best Use

Fast attack rate

Quite close range

Single target takedown

Decent damage

Limited block

Small group takedown

The One-Handed Stick class of weapons in Dying Light 2 includes visual variations such as the police baton and wrenches. This is another fast attack, short-range weapon, although they do offer a slight range advantage over Knuckledusters.

This weapon does blunt damage, which can be very effective for tackling small groups of zombies. However, it can be difficult to pull off any block/stun moves that prime parkour combat chains with such a small weapon. Combat in Dying Light 2, unlike other open-word zombie games, involves setting up combos, and this needs to be kept in mind when choosing a weapon.

5 One-Handed Hammer

Medium Blunt Damage But Slower Speed

One-Handed Hammer Hammer Dying Light 2

Pros

Cons

Best Use

Good damage

Quite close range

Single target takedown

Balanced weapon speed

Limited block

Small group takedown

The One-Handed Hammer class of weapons in Dying Light 2 includes visual variations such as the claw hammer and club hammer. This weapon does a little more blunt damage over the One-Handed Stick, but at the cost of a slower attack rate. Dying Light 2 tries to implement realistic combat that includes acrobatics and parkour, and this should drive weapon choice for players.

Dying Light 2: 16 Great Mods That Improve The Gameplay

Dying Light 2 is a fun game on its own, but these great gameplay mods make the experience even better.

Being a one-handed weapon with a shorter attack range, the One-Handed Hammer isn’t ideal for tackling larger groups of enemies. However, it is very easy to block with against single targets, thus setting up parkour combat attack chains.

4 One-Handed Mace

Too Much Overlap With The One-Handed Hammer

One-Handed Mace Dying Light 2

Pros

Cons

Best Use

Good damage

Quite close range

Single target takedown

Balanced weapon speed

Limited block

Small group takedown

The One-Handed Mace is almost identical to the One-Handed Hammer, although it is just a little slower to attack with. This is a good example of how little emphasis is put on weapons and combat in Dying Light 2. Players tend to use whichever weapon they can find, rather than specializing in a specific class.

So, deciding between the Hammer or Mace is mainly just a stylistic choice if both options are available to the player. They both do the same blunt damage and have similar attack speeds. Blocking can be problematic with the One-Handed Mace as well, so there is really very little difference here.

3 Long Stick

Medium Range Medium Speed

Long Stick Dying Light 2

Pros

Cons

Best Use

Decent range

Outclassed by other two-handed weapons

Small groups of enemies

Easy to find

Average attack speed

Medium groups of enemies

The Long Stick is the first of the three two-handed blunt weapon classes. It is entirely overshadowed by both the Long Hammer and Long Mace, but is still stronger than every one-handed weapon. Weapon variations in this class include items such as baseball bats and metal pipes.

These tips will help new players survive in Dying Light 2: Stay Human's The City.

The Long Stick is the fastest of the three large blunt weapons though, and some players will prefer it just because of this detail. It is very easy to block with as well, as are all the two-handed melee weapons. For players who don’t have a good Large Hammer or Large Mace, or who prefer a faster attack speed, a Large Stick will likely suffice. Keep in mind that zombies in Dying Light 2 can be tougher than in other games.

2 Long Hammer

Balanced Damage And Attack Speed

Long Hammer Dying Light 2

Pros

Cons

Best Use

Good range

Slow speed

Medium groups of enemies

High damage

Hard to find

Large groups of enemies

The Long Hammer could be the number one weapon on this list, as the differences between this weapon and the Long Mace are minimal. This is a solid blunt melee weapon that can take the player all the way through the main campaign, if they can find one with good stats.

The Long Hammer can decimate large groups of enemies in the right hands. A combination of good combat positioning skills and well-timed multi-target blocks can result in a flurry of parkour combat triggers and some really fun combat.

1 Long Mace

Great Damage But Low Speed

Long Mace Dying Light 2

Pros

Cons

Best Use

Good range

Very slow speed

Medium groups of enemies

Excellent damage

Hard to find

Large groups of enemies

The Long Mace is considered by many players to be the best blunt melee weapon in Dying Light 2. However, as mentioned above, the Long Hammer is comparable in many ways, and either could have taken the top spot in this list. The Long Mace wins out due to its slightly higher damage.

Dying Light 2: Best Parkour Skills to Get

Getting around is what makes Dying Light 2 as popular as it is. But without the right skills, Aiden is, politely speaking, below average at parkour.

Blocking with the long mace is a dream. With the right positioning, the player can block multiple attacks at once, easily triggering the parkour vault/kick combo to hop over a group of enemies, get a flying kick on a single target at the edge of the group, then step clear, turn around and repeat the combo. Once mastered, this move can be absolutely devastating. It is well worth spending some time farming for an artifact or legendary Long Mace. It will be the only melee weapon the player ever needs.
