Seeds have a very important role to play in Dwarf Fortress, as they will grow into the crops that can be used to create food, drinks, and more. While players are likely to embark with some number of seeds, those will be expended quite quickly after a farm plot has been established. This may leave some fans wondering how they are meant to get more seeds in Dwarf Fortress, and this guide is here to shine light on this matter.

Dwarf Fortress: How to Get More Seeds

There are several options available to Dwarf Fortress players that are trying to obtain more seeds, and the first is to use a still to brew plants into drinks. Indeed, almost all plants will leave their seeds behind when they are turned into alcohol, allowing players to continually refill their seed stockpiles and keep their dwarves satisfied. Players can also obtain seeds by milling their plants at a millstone or quern, though the seeds that are earned through brewing alone should be enough to keep a farm going.

Alternatively, fans of simulation video games can earn additional seeds without performing any type of processing by eating the plants that they grow. That said, plants that are cooked in a kitchen will not award their seeds, and players may want to restrict their dwarves from cooking their plants to prevent this scenario from occurring. For full clarity, this restriction can be put into place by opening the Labor menu, selecting the Kitchen tab, and clicking the steaming bowl next to the plant in order to turn it red.

While processing and eating raw plants are the primary ways by which players should plan to maintain their farming, there are two options that can be pursued when absolutely necessary. The first of those options is to trade for seeds when a caravan arrives, and that occurs every autumn. However, it will not always be possible for a settlement to survive without seeds for that long, requiring fans of this legendary indie game to turn to a second option.

Specifically, those players should try to gather seeds from any plants that are growing on the surface. This is done by issuing gathering orders, and it can definitely bring a settlement back from the brink of starvation. Unfortunately, this method cannot be utilized if there are no plants in the vicinity of the fortress, and roguelike fans that are in that situation may need to resign themselves to embarking with a new group of dwarves.
