Once again, Epic Games brings a free game for its store users to add to its already immeasurable list of titles. This time it's Duskers, a video game with a curious premise that wants to offer players a strategic challenge, and to do so it uses a unique visual identity.
Customers will be able to get their hands on this indie game for free until March 2. Duskers is one of the most original, daring and disturbing sci-fi games on the Epic Games Store, so users should claim the title while they still can.
Epic Games Store Gives Away Duskers This Week
For those who do not know what to play this weekend, Epic Games Store, as always, offers a totally free option. Every week, it gives away one or more games from its catalog that once the user downloads, they stay forever in their personal library. This week the store offers one that no one should pass up: Duskers. In this abstract and disturbing sci-fi roguelite game, developed by Misfits Attic, and released in 2016, the universe has become a large graveyard filled with a bunch of destroyed spaceships. Players step into the shoes of a drone pilot whose goal is to discover what has happened.
The players' task is to operate drones to infiltrate the ruins of these ships to find the means to survive. The wreckage contains resources such as scrap metal and fuel that they need to continue exploring, and although all the humans are gone, there are other things lurking in the darkest corners. Players will have to avoid that hostile presence that they can only see through their radars and hear through the old drone microphones. The title puts the onus on users to program their defense drones and advance through the different levels. The dangerous alien infestations that can quickly overpower players' drones mean that caution and cunning are their two most effective weapons, and the randomization means that every game is a little different, making it a game with high replay value, never quite knowing what to expect.
Those who like retro computing will feel right at home, because the game's graphics emulate an old computer. Dusker's aesthetics are quite peculiar as the character has to watch the action from their monitors. The use of retro technology is crucial to create its menacing, overwhelming and unsettling atmosphere, as players re-establish communication almost blindly. With the help of design elements like this, Dusker promises constant suspense. This title is often compared to the atmosphere of Alien or Space Hulk, and that's exactly what it captures: a certain feeling of not being alone, and of being vulnerable in a giant piece of debris floating among the stars.
It is, of course, a tremendously original and different premise, but one that has earned the admiration of a variety of players already. On Steam, the game has 89% positive reviews, demonstrating that, although it may seem a niche title, it has many qualities to please those who dare to play it. Fans of all kinds of sci-fi thrillers might find that Duskers is up their alley, even if the genre is outside their usual tastes.
