The Dungeons of Hinterberg demo is now available to play. This Steam-exclusive release arrives a month ahead of the game's summer 2024 launch.

Dungeons of Hinterberg is the debut title from Austrian developer Microbird Games. First announced in June 2023, Dungeons of Hinterberg evoked some Hi-Fi Rush comparisons upon its reveal, not least because of its heavily stylized graphics and fast-paced combat. But it plays more like a hybrid between The Legend of Zelda and Persona, with the game revolving around exploring dungeons, solving puzzles, fighting enemies, making friends, and managing time.

Dungeons of Hinterberg Demo Debuts at Steam Next Fest 2024

Prospective buyers who are intrigued by this concept can now get some first-hand experience with the game, courtesy of the newly released Dungeons of Hinterberg demo. While the game is also scheduled to reach the Xbox Series X/S on day one, its trial version is only available to PC gamers, having debuted in early June as part of the Steam Next Fest 2024 demo lineup.

Content-wise, the demo version of the game is more limited than the Dungeons of Hinterberg playtest that took place over the week-long period ending May 16. That closed beta offered players the opportunity to experience the opening hours of the game, including several exploratory segments taking place in Doberkogel, an idyllic region filled with yellow alpine pastures stretching as far as the eye can see. Meanwhile, the newly released demo offers a more contained experience in the form of a single in-game day cycle beginning on the seventh day of the story.

The Dungeons of Hinterberg demo still manages to alternate between nature exploration, dungeon crawling, and hanging out in the titular town of Hinterberg. That last part also serves as an introduction to the game's social sim elements, with players being able to make acquaintances who will later turn into friends. Each relationship level they earn with any one of them unlocks new perks in a Persona-like fashion. E.g., the very first social link, Alex, will allow players to look up everyone's relationship perks after they make her acquaintance.

Microbird and publisher Curve Games plan to debut this upcoming action RPG on July 18. While the game's pricing details are yet to be disclosed, what's clear already is that it will be possible to play it on release without breaking the bank. That's because Dungeons of Hinterberg has previously been confirmed as a day-one Xbox Game Pass title. Microsoft's subscribers will be able to play it via the Xbox Series X/S, PC, or Xbox Cloud Gaming, which is exclusive to the Ultimate tier of Xbox Game Pass.
