The holidays are here, which means the season of giving is now in full swing. Of course, it can be difficult to find gifts to actually give to friends and family, especially those with something of a "nerdy" slant. It could range anything from books and movies to games and electronics, even to those more into tabletops like Dungeons & Dragons.

Luckily, there are plenty of potential presents to dish out to those invested in tabletop games or anyone that may enjoy rolling some dice, so here are the best tabletop gaming gifts for the season.

 Role-Playing Games

Dungeons and Dragons Fire Giant

For those that haven't quite jumped on board the role-playing train quite yet, a good place to start is with a core rulebook. There are a ton of different options out there, from Fantasy games to Science Fiction adventures, all the way to games set in the Wild Wild West. The possibilities are pretty much endless, though the two safest bets are Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder. While choosing between D&D and Pathfinder is difficult in its own right, the two games are currently the foremost TRPGs out there, with Dungeons and Dragons enjoying a healthy renaissance over the past half-decade or so. Either option is sure to be a good gift for any geeks out there - whether they're a veteran to role-playing games or beginners.

Miniatures and Tiles

For most Tabletop RPGs, the beauty of the game is that everything can take place in one's head. There isn't a necessity for fancy minis or props for an entire elven village so long as there's a good, descriptive Dungeon Master. But, those visual aids can certainly help push along the experience, elevating it to new heights and making it all the more immersive. It's worth investing in those props for that reason, or gifting them to those that may benefit from them. There's a wide range of miniatures out in the wild, which can make it difficult to find just the right one. Luckily, there are websites that we'll allow users to customize their own miniatures, allowing for combinations as straightforward as a typical human fighter and as wacky cybernetic bards.

Those miniatures are going to need something to stand on too, so it may be worth investing in some tiles to gift as well. There's a broad range of these on the market as well, though the Dungeons and Dragons ones are a nice way to start. They can be used for pretty much any game, making them incredibly versatile. They're an easy addition to make to the game, and make the Dungeon Master's life a lot easier, so it's something that a whole table will enjoy.

Board Games

There are thousands of different board games on the market, and there's a good chance that anyone into tabletop gaming will be willing to give a few others a try. There's a board game for pretty much any interest, whether its a specific movie or TV show, or any other hobby. While some will immediately remember their childhood days destroying friendships over matches of Monopoly or Risk, there are plenty of new board games out there for everyone, even for families. They can be a great way to expand on a hobby that the gift-receiver already loves and can give both parties a chance to bond.

Accessories

There are a ton of different things that can go along with a game night. Whether that's a fancy new set of dice to roll with, a dice tray to roll said dice in, or any other number of accessories to go along with a night of playing tabletop games. Of course, it can be difficult to nail down what someone would want. Everyone's taste is a little different, and there's no telling if they'd be more interested in a nice pair of metallic dice or just some colorful ones.

Video Games

And, of course, who doesn't love video games? For those that are into tabletop games but maybe want to take a stroll into the digital world, there are plenty of video games that mirror some of the elements of tabletop games. These are opportunities for great roleplaying and narrative experiences, oftentimes with combat similar to what one would find in a tabletop game. There are even some that can be played with friends, making it slightly easier to organize a play session with those close to the person receiving the gift.

  • Divinity: Original Sin 2 (XB1/PS4)
  • Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire (XB1/PS4/NSW)
  • Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition (XB1/PS4/NSW)

Finding good gifts for the tabletop geeks out there can be difficult, but there are plenty of options to seek out for those that have a general idea of what they're looking for. While tabletop gamers are certainly some of the more challenging people to shop for, the sheer volume of possibilities should make it relatively easy to find something for any close friend or colleague. Plus, there's a wide range of prices in the tabletop world, so gifts can range anywhere from a few dollars to a few hundred. There's also plenty to pick up for friends trying to get their pals everything the need to get started with games like Dungeons and Dragons, just in case they need to recruit a few extra party members.
