The live-action Dungeons and Dragons series was given a straight-to-series order at Paramount Plus. However, fans should not expect the series to be connected to Chris Pine's Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game where players embark on journeys involving elves, orcs, and other fantastic creatures. The game is overseen by a host called the Dungeon Master, who devises campaigns for players. The results of these campaigns are often determined by rolling dice.

Deadline reports Paramount Plus won the Dungeons and Dragons live-action TV series in a "competitive situation" after lead studio eOne took the project out in November. The series is described as eOne's largest TV project ever and could potentially launch a Dungeons and Dragons universe consisting of scripted and unscripted shows. The Dungeons and Dragons live-action TV series pilot will be written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber.

After eOne was acquired by Hasbro in 2019, adapting the Dungeons and Dragons property for television was reportedly a top focus for eOne President of Global Television Michael Lombardo. The Dungeons and Dragons live-action TV series will be a joint production between eOne and Paramount Pictures. However, while both companies co-produced and co-financed the Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie, the Paramount Plus TV series will separate from the upcoming film, according to The Hollywood Reporter sources.

The Dungeons and Dragons live-action TV series joins the Halo series as part of Paramount Plus' video game adaptation library. While the latter series was met with mixed reviews, Halo season 2 began production in late 2022, offering hope to fans who were not thrilled with how the show adapted the source material.

Known for his work on blockbuster action films like Dwayne Johnson's Red Notice and Skyscraper, Marshall Thurber has the skills to deliver a thrilling series. However, whether the Dungeons and Dragons show can provide quality entertainment regularly might depend on who else will be involved behind the scenes. Nonetheless, fans of the classic role-playing game are probably excited to see the property come to life on the small screen.

The Dungeons and Dragons Paramount Plus series does not have a release date at this time.
