There are few classes in Dungeons & Dragons as powerful as the Sorcerer, with access to universe altering spells that are powered by Charisma rather than Intelligence. However, as development continues towards D&D 6th Edition, there are still ways that Wizards of the Coast can look at improving the player experience for anyone who chooses to embark on adventures as a Sorcerer.

Now, when it comes to improvements on a class like the Sorcerer, it might be easy for fans to immediately look at expanding the spell list, or increasing their ability to take or avoid damage. That being said, there's a level of balance that still needs to be struck with making sure that the Sorcerer doesn't become the defining class of Dungeons & Dragons.

A Sorcerer's Spell List in 6th Edition

Like the Wizard class in D&D, the Sorcerer has access to several of the most powerful spells available among spellcasters. This not only includes magic ranking all the way up to 9th level, but specifically gives high level characters access to the universe bending Wish spell. So, expanding this specific list of spells to give the Sorcerer more customization options or access to stronger magic isn't exactly a problem that needs to be addressed.

Instead, a more general change that could be coming to spellcasting as a whole might be the key to giving the Sorcerer more options and utility both during and outside of combat: the possible introduction of entirely new spells, either from popular D&D homebrew magic, or concepts that had previously been tested in Unearthed Arcana. This expansion of both developer and player created extensions into D&D 6E's magic could also be the key to guiding the types of spells that a player might give their characters as their Sorcerer progresses.

Taking another look at both homebrew and D&D's current Unearthed Arcana, one key aspect where Wizards of the Coast has already enhanced the Sorcerer is in the Sorcerous Origin subclasses. Reworkings of subclasses like Clockwork Soul or introductions of new origins like Lunar Magic are the best place to start when it comes to changing up and improving how players build their Sorcerer. More cosmic or planar options in particular could be an interesting way to not only improve a Sorcerer's arsenal, but also give players some inspiration for giving a character a compelling and fantastical backstory.

Dungeons & Dragons' Squishy Spellcasters

One of the biggest ways that spellcasters are balanced to not dominate combat is in how squishy they are. A clever player can find ways to pull away from combat, keeping themselves at a distance while another class like D&D's Fighters or Barbarians stay in front and take all the damage. Of course, most DMs aren't going to simply let a Sorcerer throw endless magic at their bosses and monster hordes. So, spellcasters still need a way to better defend themselves than what is currently available for these squishy characters.

There are some spells that already address some of this need for Sorcerers to be able to stay out of the line of sight of powerful enemies, like the 2nd level spell Misty Step. Using a bonus action and a spell slot to duck out of the more active areas of a battlefield are exactly the type of flexibility that a Sorcerer needs, but perhaps reworking these classic D&D spells could make them more accessible. This could be done by linking this specific type of magic to a class feature, or giving some subclasses different versions of this that are tied to proficiency or sorcery points, rather than spell slots.

Beyond this, giving spellcasters more options to increase their Armor Class, such as improved versions of the Mage Armor spell, or letting it be cast with higher spell slots would be helpful. There are a lot of ways to keep spellcasters alive without having to sacrifice the balance that currently makes them so easy to kill, all of which could also make for more interesting enemies when a good D&D DM decides to pit their players against a powerful Sorcerer.
