David Lynch has shared he has “zero interest” in Denis Villeneuve’s updated take on the seminal science-fiction novelDune. Lynch directed a version of Frank Herbert’s epic back in 1984 -- an experience he described as being a “total failure” for him.

Lynch described how his time on the movie was a heartache for him, pointing out how the project was a failure and that what was ultimately released didn’t resemble what he had envisioned as he didn’t have final cut. He added how the theatrical release didn't represent the film he wanted to make and, despite liking certain parts of the movie, considered it to be a failure.

Upon release, 1984’s Dune was an unfortunate critical and commercial failure, though it has become a cult classic in the years since its release. In 2000, the Sci Fi Channel released a three-episode miniseries exploring Herbert’s novel in more depth than Lynch’s film was afforded. The show won two Emmys in 2001.

Villeneuve’s Dune will be a new version of Herbert’s source novel and will be split into two movies. It tells the story of the Atreides family and their arrival on the desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune -- a planet that contains the most valuable substance in the universe, known as “spice.”

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Dune is currently scheduled for release on December 18, 2020.
