This year’s Oscar nomination ceremony was hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan, who announced all nominees for the 94th Academy Awards. Dune is one of two films that have managed to snag a double-digit number of nominations at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.

The Academy has yet to announce the host for the ceremony in March, though ABC has confirmed that there will be one. Following Jimmy Kimmel's hosting back in 2018, the Oscars have not had a host since. With this year’s impressive list of nominations, the stars present at the live ceremony will be able to speak for themselves.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune has earned 10 nominations, including Best Picture. Its other recognitions include Cinematography (Greig Fraser), Costume Design (Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan), Film Editing (Joe Walker), Makeup and Hairstyling (Donald Mowat, Love Larson, and Eva von Bahr), Original Score (Hans Zimmer), Production Design (Patrice Vermette and Zsuzsanna Sipos), Sound (Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Theo Green, Doug Hemphill, and Robert Barlett), Visual Effects (Paul Lambert, Tristan Myles, Brian Connor, and Gerd Nefzer), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth).

Denis Villeneuve Dune

Despite Dune's impressive list, it has been outnumbered in this year's nominations by The Power of the Dog, which earned an impressive 12 nominations. The Power of the Dog opposes Dune in 7 categories including Best Picture, Original Score, and Adapted Screenplay. The Power of the Dog did earn Benedict Cumberbatch a nomination for Actor in a Leading Role and two nominations in the category for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Dune is followed by Steven Spielberg's West Side Story and Kenneth Branagh's Belfast, which both received 7 nominations.

Villeneuve was notably absent from the Directing category, though Branagh, Spielberg, and The Power of the Dog's director Jane Campion all received nominations. Since his first Academy Award nomination in 2011 with his Canadian drama, Incendies, Villeneuve's films have been nominated for 28 Oscars. Dune's 10 nominations are the most Villeneuve has received in a single ceremony, only approached by the 8 nominations Arrival received at the 2017 ceremony.

Of those 28 nominations, Villeneuve has only won 3. Dune is a favorite in some of its categories, which will add to Villeneuve's accolades. As Villeneuve works on Dune: Part Two, it will likely pull out all the stops and receive an equally powerful number of nominations following its premiere. In order to see how many awards Dune will take home this year, everyone will have to wait until March.

The 94th Academy Awards will air on March 27, 2022.
