Any fan of the Dune franchise knows that the colossal sandworms of the planet Arrakis are a huge part of the story, both figuratively and literally, so with the upcoming film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel, extra care is being put into bringing them to life.

Speaking with Empire Magazine recently (as reported by /Film), director Denis Villeneuve touched upon the process of designing one of science fiction’s most iconic creatures for the new movie. Given the mixed reception to previous adaptations of Dune and their worms’ designs, it was important that the production team get everything they could right.

“We talked about every little detail that would make such a beast possible, from the texture of the skin, to the way the mouth opens, to the system to eat its food in the sand,” he said. “It was a year of work to design and to find the perfect shape that looked prehistoric enough.”

As of this writing, the results of all that work have yet to be officially revealed. Although fans still have to wait to see the film’s version of the sandworms, its distributor Warner Bros. has been more forthcoming with photos of Dune's human characters, including protagonist Paul Atreides as played by actor Timothée Chalamet.

Dune, the first film in a two-part adaptation, is set to premiere in theaters on December 18.
