The Dune 2 release date is now closer than previously expected after a recent rescheduling by the studio in response to a spot opening up.
2021’s Dune was a major success both critically and with fans, who spurred it on to nearly half a million at the box office despite being released on HBO Max simultaneously and leaking online before its premiere. The planned second half of the adaptation was greenlit in October of 2021 and confirmed to be in development, being billed to have an epic difference from the first Dune film before being predictably held up by the double strikes that brought most of the industry to a screeching halt for the better part of the year.
Call of Duty Confirms Dune Crossover Bundle
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 reveals another crossover bundle that is coming to the game soon, this time with the popular Dune film franchise.
With the strikes over and things in Hollywood rapidly returning to full throttle, the eagerly anticipated Dune 2 is now even closer than fans expected, even if only a bit. Legendary announced the Dune 2 release date has been shifted from its previously stated slot on March 15, 2024, to the new date of March 1, 2024. This marks a two-week move-up for the Dune 2 release date that was previously delayed by Warner Bros., bringing it that much closer for fans of the franchise. The move also signals Dune 2 taking over the release date vacated by Universal's The Fall Guy, which was moved to May 3, 2024 by the studio.
While this is good news for the studios, as the new date is much better strategically, it might ring a bit hollow for more dedicated fans, who initially expected Dune 2 to premiere much earlier before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes made that timeline impossible to meet up with. Dune 2, which promises to take place on a much bigger scale and show off more of Dune's unique science fiction martial arts, still doesn’t take the cake for the most troubled project in an IP fraught with adaptation issues since its creation several decades ago. At least, unlike some of its predecessors, Dune 2 will see the light of day after its troubled development.
In addition to the direct sequel to 2021’s Dune, the plan for the film series also includes a potential third entry, optimistically titled Dune Messiah. In addition to Dune 3 avoiding a common trilogy pitfall due to the structure of the first two films, it would also allow for the full realization of director Denis Villeneuve's vision for the film series, bringing a dainty end to a shockingly successful adaptation of a previously vintage-confined property.
