Excitement is building for the release of the PlayStation 5. The task of delivering another system, in the most successful home console franchise of all time, is undoubtedly a challenge and it seems that PlayStation 5 will be implementing a lot of new features. Of course with new features being introduced this will mean that other elements will not be seen again. While it is not completely useless the console will steadily bring an end to the popular DualShock 4 controller.

The new PlayStation 5 controller, the DualSense, was widely critiqued for its appearance despite introducing some features which will likely increase immersion. Haptic feedback on the triggers has been a significant selling point for the upcoming controller and it seems that it will be the standard way to play PlayStation 5 games as only "compatible" PlayStation 4 games will allow the use of the DualShock 4.

Many players have wondered if the DualShock 4 would crossover to a new generation of the console but it seems that Sony is following its pattern of encouraging entirely new hardware purchases with each PlayStation iteration. When asked if the current PlayStation 4 controller would be compatible with the next generation of consoles, Sony explained, "No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller." While the new controllers will undoubtedly add to the experience, many will question just how much of a difference the DualSense control will make and some may be skeptical about the reasoning Sony has given.

Meanwhile, others will argue that the controller makes a legitimate difference to the gaming experience. Either way, it does raise questions about whether free gaming upgrades will allow for the use of DualSense 4 and what games will be backward compatible with the new console. Sony has primarily taken a remaster/ remake approach with old titles like Shadow of the Colossus and Gravity Rush. With this practice in mind, it will be interesting to see if players will be able to use their controllers on remasters or whether it is best to fully commit to the DualSense.

Undoubtedly some players will be unhappy with letting go of their current controllers, but the DualSense may fix existing issues and allow players to have a more enjoyable experience. At least this is what the statement from Sony suggests.

The PlayStation 5 is set to release in the holidays 2020.
