  • The developers of Dragon's Dogma 2 have looked to Grand Theft Auto 5 for inspiration in creating a living world with independent NPCs.
  • With an ambitious open world and a map four times the size of the original game, Dragon's Dogma 2 is shaping up to be an impressive experience.

Capcom's upcoming open world action-RPG Dragon's Dogma 2 is taking inspiration from another open world game, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5. The original Dragon's Dogma launched in 2012 and offered a genuinely unique twist on the open world fantasy.

Dragon's Dogma stood out from the pack thanks to its unique pawn system, as well as its large scale boss fights. Dragon's Dogma 2 looks to carry on the traditions of the original game, but with a ton of new features to get fans excited. Capcom recently unveiled a new trailer for Dragon's Dogma 2 at Tokyo Game Show 2023 that looked incredibly impressive, and the game's developers have since revealed more about the project in interviews.

Speaking to VGC, Dragon's Dogma 2 director Hideaki Itsuno spoke about the game's inspirations. Itsuno said that the main inspiration for Dragon's Dogma 2 was the original game, as one of the team's goals with the sequel is to incorporate features that they wanted to include in the first one but were unable to due to time constraints and the limitations of the hardware at the time. Another inspiration for Dragon's Dogma 2 is Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5, with Itsuno expressing admiration for how the game featured a world that "really felt like the NPCs were going about their lives independently of the player." Itsuno said that the team is hoping to achieve something similar and create a "living world" for Dragon's Dogma 2.

It remains to be seen if Dragon's Dogma 2 can successfully create an open world that feels alive as Grand Theft Auto 5, but just the fact that the developers are aiming for that goal bodes well for the game world. Dragon's Dogma 2's map is said to be four times the size of the original game as well. Based on what's been shown so far and what Capcom has claimed about the game, it's definitely sounding like Dragon's Dogma 2 is shaping up to be an incredibly ambitious open world experience.

Of course, fans won't know for sure if Dragon's Dogma 2 is able to live up to expectations until they get the chance to play through it themselves. Dragon's Dogma 2 is without a release date at the time of this writing, but the game is expected to launch at some point in 2024. If so, Dragon's Dogma 2 will be coming out a whopping 12 years after the first game launched, which almost seems to mirror the wait for GTA 6.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
