Highlights

  • Upgrading weapons in Dragon's Dogma 2 can improve stats, but some starting weapons are better left unenhanced.
  • Players should consider better options than the Redolent Whisper, Magian Crutch, Wooden Staff, Hunter's Bow, and Grievous Horns.
  • Weapons like the Steel Urchin and Initiate's Blade are strong enough without enhancements, saving players time and resources.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is an action role-playing game with a variety of weaponry and gear for players to collect depending on the vocation they have chosen for themselves and their Pawn. A mechanic in this title that many players are likely to take advantage of after purchasing or finding a weapon is enhancing it.

Dragon's Dogma 2 has an abundance of weapons to choose from. For those using the Fighter vocation, these maces are worth considering.

Enhancing gear increases its stats, as long as players have the materials and the gold needed to upgrade it. Although all weaponry can be upgraded, there are some weapons that players are better off leaving as they are when they first encounter them. These are the weapons in Dragon's Dogma 2 that players shouldn't waste their materials on.

As the Trickster vocation doesn't damage foes, the strength and magick stats of their weaponry instead determine the likelihood of this vocation attracting enemies and fooling them with their illusions. The Redolent Whisper is the starting weapon for the vocation and, therefore, when players change to the Trickster for the first time, they gain this weapon.

The Redolent Whisper can be purchased at Awaran's Arms or found in the tomb of Te'Glarr. However, by the time players unlock the Trickster class, they have likely unlocked better weaponry too, meaning it doesn't need to be enhanced.

The Magick Archer is another late-game vocation that is exclusive to only the Arisen. Players that have originally played as an archer are likely to move to this vocation, but this also means picking up a new bow that fires magic instead of arrows.

Magian Crutch is arguably one of the weakest options for players and, similar to the Trickster vocation, many are likely to have already unlocked or purchased better quality Magick Archer bows to use instead of this beginner option. Nonetheless, this weapon can be purchased from Roderick's Smithy.

Players that choose to play the Mage vocation are likely to start the game with the Wooden Staff or purchase it early into their adventure from the Borderwatch Outpost. Besides being quite the basic weapon that players will outgrow quickly, players are also unlikely to shoot magic at the foes they face.

Dragon's Dogma 2: Best Archistaves, Ranked

Archistaves are the weapon of choice for the Sorcerer vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2, and these are the best Archistaves in the game.

Instead, players will likely be using their Mage weapon skills in replacement of their basic attack, which relies on the magick stat of weapons such as the Wooden Staff. Players should therefore wait until they have at least made it to Vernworth to purchase a new staff for their Mage.

While some of the weapons available to be purchased in Vernworth are worthwhile, others are better left alone. One example of a weapon that players shouldn't bother enhancing is the Hunter's Bow, which can be purchased at Roderick's Smithy and Chandler's General Store or found in a chest in the Cavern of the Forsaken.

As seen by the stats, this bow is great for archers that wish to knockdown their opponents for the rest of the team, but has poor physical damage overall. While enhancing it may improve its overall damage, players are likely to find better bows to improve, as well as be more physically appealing.

The Warrior is arguably one of the best vocations for the Arisen or their pawn in Dragon's Dogma 2. This is due to its hard hitting moves that are only made better by the available weaponry for the vocation.

One example of this is the Steel Urchin, a huge spiky ball on a stick, which is available at Roderick's Smithy. While impressive looking and with decent starting stats, a player won't want to enhance this weapon at a merchant as the base weapon will be enough to defeat a variety of foes before a player finds a merchant with better Warrior gear.

Like the Wooden staff, the sorcerer is another vocation that hardly likes to use their weapon's basic attack and instead uses their weapon skills. Therefore, it isn't necessary to upgrade staff like the Grievous Horns, which is available at Roderick's Smithy, when there is likely to be better staff to be found in the future.

Finding the best Staff for your Mage Arisen or main Pawn is the first step to creating the ultimate Support in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Besides this, the base stats of the Grievous Horns are also quite low, which will only be rectified slightly by enhancing the weapon at various merchants. Therefore, using it as is and waiting till the player finds something better is a cheaper option.

Out of all the vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2, players have come to the conclusion that the Mystic Spearhand is by far the best. Unlike other weapons mentioned on the list, this spear, or in this case the Initiate's Blade, deals not only physical damage, but magic damage too.

While the Initiate's Blade, available at Roderick's Smithy, is a brilliant starting option for many players, it isn't a weapon players should be upgrading with their materials. Instead, players should save money until they find a spear that has an elemental effect or even better stats overall.

As seen throughout the list of weapons that players should avoid enhancing in Dragon's Dogma 2, the usual weapons that aren't worth the materials are those the player is likely to start the game with or can purchase early into their adventure.

This includes weapons like the Trusty Sword, which can be purchased at the very start of the game at the Borderwatch Outpost for the Fighter Vocation. Players are likely to find better weaponry by the time they have the materials needed to enhance the weapon further and, therefore, it's easier to just leave the Trusty Sword as it is.
