How To Complete "The Sotted Sage" Quest in DD2

The Volcanic Island Camp settlement from Dragon's Dogma 2

Players looking to unlock the Warfarer vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2 will need to speak to Lamond, the drunken soldier that sits outside the entry to the hot springs at the Volcanic Island Camp. This camp can be accessed from Bakbattahl, but will require some time and a strong party of the Arisen and their Pawns, as the road is treacherous and will be filled with swarms of goblins, harpies, hobgoblins, and some larger foes.

To reach the Volcanic Base Camp, players will need to follow the path that leads to the south of Bakbattahl, which is quite long and winding. The path will eventually turn to the east, and you will come to a cave called Drabnir’s Grotto, which you will need to journey through before you can reach the camp. There are a large volume of enemies on the trip, so be sure to rest and make camp as often as you can.

Once you reach the Volcanic Island Camp, players will want to venture up the hill to the left and continue to climb until they find a sign saying "This way to Geyser Hamlet!". Once at this sign, go forward a little more and take the ladder to the left. Once up the ladder, simply follow the path and you will find Lamond slumped against a stone pillar. After speaking with him, you will be tasked with acquiring goods to please him, which you will quickly discover is Newt Liqueur. To unlock the Warfarer vocation players will need to complete Lamond's quest "The Sotted Sage" by giving him three bottles of Newt Liqueur.

How To Find Newt Liqueur

Newt Liqueur is not a particularly common resource in Dragon's Dogma 2 and may require some thorough searching to find, but the prize at the end of this quest is well worth the effort. Newt Liqueur can be acquired in a few ways:

  • It can be crafted by combining Fruit Wine and a Saurian Tail. Fruit Wine is given to you by Captain Brant after you purchase a home by completing the "A Place To Call Home" quest. Saurian tails can be looted from the bodies of the lizard enemies you encounter on your travels.
  • A bottle of Newt Liqueur can be found at the Windwalker's house.
  • Two bottles of Newt Liqueur can be purchased from a secret store in Bakbattahl.

How to Find The Windwalker's House

Player's traveling to the Volcanic Base Camp will actually pass the Windwalker's house if they are taking the road from Bakbattahl, which begins from the south of the city and turns to the east. Players will encounter an NPC named Gautstafr, who asks that you acquire wildflowers for him to help with his back pain, which triggers a quest called "Put a Spring in Thy Step". Once he has been assisted, he will ask you to visit him at his home for a reward. His house is a little further down the road from where you found him and requires that you venture to the left of the path.

Once you have reached the left turn in the road, you will want to journey down the hill and along a path made of rocks over the water, which will curve around and put you at the bottom of another hill. Continue up the hill to the Windwalker's house, where a bottle of Newt Liqueur will be found on a table to the right of the entrance.

How To Buy Newt Liqueur in Bakbattahl

The most accessible location to access Newt Liqueur in Dragon's Dogma 2 is the secret store, called Higg's Tavern Stand. It is located to the far north of the city and will require that some very specific conditions be met before the vendor will be willing to sell you their wares. To gain access to the stand, you will need to perform the following:

  • As a Beastren or while wearing a Beastren mask, pick up a bag of hay outside of the shop and drop it into the pen right next to the bags.
  • This will trigger a Beastren named Karnel to ask what you are doing, and ask that you, the "guest" be escorted inside.
  • After this short scene, head to the right of the store and go up the staircase and through the door, where you will find Ezekiel, the shopkeeper.
  • Purchase the Newt Liqueur for 5,000 g each.

It is worth noting that this will only be successful if you are a Beastren or in disguise, as the store is Beastren-run and they will not cater to humans. If you attempt to move the bag of hay as a human, Karnel will call for the guards and a fight will break out, which can result in you being put in gaol.

Some players have encountered a bug whereby they still cannot access the store after completing the above tasks, as Kieth still remains outside the door to keep visitors from coming in. If this happens, you will need to kill Karnel and Kieth , run from the guards, then return later. After that, the store will be opened. If you don't want to kill NPCs, there is always the option to revive them with Wakestones.

How To Unlock The Warfarer Vocation in DD2

Once you have three bottles of Newt Liqueur, players will need to return to Lamond to give him the bottles and complete the quest. You will engage in brief dialogue with the soldier, who will reward you with a rotten egg for the first bottle, then grant you the Warfarer vocation after the second two are given. He also explains that he was also an Arisen, but failed to slay his dragon, and it eventually went away.

The Warfarer Vocation, Explained

The Warfarer vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2

The Warfarer vocation will undoubtedly be a popular choice in Dragon's Dogma 2 as it is the only class that enables gamers to choose any weapon available in the game, regardless of the class it is designed for. This means that you will be able to make a well-rounded character build that can draw influences from any of the vocations in the game, which will open up your combat opportunities a significant amount. It also enables players to switch weapons quickly, so melee-forward builds can quickly swap to magic or a ranged weapon if the situation calls for it.

Another appealing aspect of the Warfarer character class is being to mix and match the abilities of all classes in Dragon's Dogma 2 to best utilize the skills that suit your playstyle. You will be restricted to which abilities are active according to your weapon, but this will enable players to have multiple weapons with active skills that can be quickly swapped, allowing DD2 players to tackle any and every foe and exploit their weaknesses.
