With Pokemon GO having become a global success for Nintendo and Niantic, it's no surprise to see other companies attempting to replicate said success for themselves. Only a couple of weeks ago, Microsoft revealed its own take with Minecraft Earth and now Square Enix has thrown its hat into the ring with a Dragon Quest-themed version, titled Dragon Quest Walk.

Much like how Pokemon GO allowed players to encounter and catch Nintendo's colorful creatures in their own neighborhoods, Dragon Quest Walk seems to aim to do pretty much the same thing. The trailer below shows many locations in Japan being swarmed with the JRPG series' monsters, including the iconic Slimes.

But instead of catching these monsters, players must defeat them in classic turn-based battles, alongside a party of original characters that they will meet during quests. Players will also be able to upgrade their equipment to take on even stronger monsters and will have their own room they can decorate with furniture and the like.

At the moment, Dragon Quest Walk doesn't have a release date but a limited beta will begin next week in Japan on June 11th. There is currently no word on whether the title will come to the West or not, but given the series' growing popularity, it has more of a shot now than it would have a few years ago.

During the announcement event, series executive producer Yuu Miyake also shared some words on the as-of-yet unannounced Dragon Quest 12, stating "[We] are currently making preparations on series developments that will connect to XII. I think it’s still too early, but we would like to announce it in some form, so please wait a little while longer.”

In the meantime, fans of the series still have plenty to look forward to besides the mobile game. Dragon Quest Builders 2 - a JRPG/Minecraft hybrid of sorts - is still on track for a release in July, and the Switch port of the incredibly successful Dragon Quest 11 will release later in the year.

Aside from that, there are still suspicions that Erdrick, a protagonist from the series, will be revealed as one of the DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, though the latest Smash Bros. rumors about this particular subject now suggest that this may not be the case. Regardless, we're bound to learn the identity of at least one of these characters at Nintendo's E3 Direct next week.

Dragon Quest Walk will become available on iOS and Android devices.
