Dragon Quest Treasures releases this week, which is soon enough that tantalizing details are already available. Thanks to a recent interview, anxious consumers now have an estimate as to how long it will take to clear the Dragon Quest Treasures campaign.

Dragon Quest Treasures is the newest addition to the beloved Dragon Quest franchise, serving as an offshoot series in the vein of Dragon Quest Monsters. The games first came west as Dragon Warrior when Nintendo localized the first entry and gave it away to Nintendo Power subscribers way back in 1989 (the global name became Dragon Quest starting with Dragon Quest 8 for PlayStation 2). Since then, the IP has built a following among those gamers who like their turn-based RPGs set in sprawling medieval worlds populated by the lovably malicious Dragon Quest slime enemies, ambitious sorcerers with an eye on world domination, and the brave heroes who risk everything to put them in their place.

The brilliant fantasy world of Dragon Quest will once again keep completionists busy for as long as 100 hours, a translated Famitsu interview with producer Taichi Inuzuka revealed. Players who spend less time obsessively exploring every nook and cranny can expect to reach the closing credits in a more modest 30 hours or thereabouts, on average. That still puts the adventure in line with a lot of recent releases to the genre, which lately have skewed shorter than they did in some previous console generations.

According to the same interview, Dragon Quest Treasures grew out of a desire to try something new with the series as Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 (a 3DS entry that remains exclusive to Japan) development reached its conclusion. Although no new installments have been added to that other series in more than 5 years, Inuzuka noted that fans shouldn't expect it to simply "disappear." That's the case even with Dragon Quest Treasures releasing this week.

The Dragon Quest world looks like it could remain very busy in years to follow, with Dragon Quest 12 well into development and with new Dragon Quest information coming this month at the Jump Festa event. There are a lot of possibilities at this point, from a new Dragon Quest Monsters game, to another installment in the popular Dragon Quest Builders series, to a less expected treat like a new Rocket Slime game. A new mobile entry is, as always, another possibility. Besides that, there are likely to be new details relating to the Dragon Quest 3 remake, which is still on its way. One way or another, franchise fans should have plenty to keep them busy through December and beyond.

Dragon Quest Treasures releases for Nintendo Switch on December 9th, 2022.
