Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is a Dragon Quest spin-off that is jam-packed with unique Monsters and an adventurous story. Players are thrown into the world as Psaro, a half-monster, half-human, who is on a revenge quest to become the Master of Monsterkind.

Psaro must wrangle Monsters to join his party and fight for him as he completes his quest. However, he is gifted his starter Monster based on a series of questions rather than having to scout for one. Of course, DQM: The Dark Prince players can choose which starter they'd like based on their preferences, but some are more beginner-friendly than others.

How to Choose a Starter Monster

Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince

There are four starter Monsters to choose from. Players won't be able to choose their starter Monster until they finish the first part of the introduction. Psaro has been outcasted to a village that is steadily attacked by Monsters working for his devious father. A local named Monty offers to give Psaro a Monster of his own to help him defend himself after a particularly brutal attack.

Monty will meet Psaro at his cabin and then ask him yes or no questions to determine what kind of Monster he should be paired with to start. The questions include the following statements:

  • Would you say you prefer lovable monsters to more rugged types?
  • Would you prefer a monster with sleek skin to one that's on the furrier side?
  • And do you like compact monsters?
  • Do you like weird and wonderful monsters?

Depending on players' choices, they will be offered a Monster that aligns. If players aren't happy with their choice after answering the questions, they can start over as many times as they need before confirming their starter.

The best starter Monster is Mud Mannequin, because it is versatile as a debuffer and attacker. However, players will most likely swap their starter from their party as they find stronger Monsters or start fusing species.
