Denuvo continues to be a controversial addition to any PC game currently on the market. Its inclusion is often met with ire from PC gamers and its removal with praise. In this case, it is the latter of the two.
Publisher Square Enix has removed Denuvo Anti-Tamper from Dragon Quest Builders 2. The update to remove the anti-piracy software was quietly released earlier this month to little attention. Users discovered its removal via the website SteamDB on the Dragon Quest Builders 2 page which notes that the patch was released on June 3.
This patch comes just shy of seven months from Dragon Quest Builders 2's launch on Steam. It seems very few of its players are aware of the change based on the official Steam forums of the game. Only one thread mentions its removal due to what players considered an out of place update.
Denuvo remains one of the most contentious implementations of DRM within recent gaming memory. The additional software which is bundled with some PC games is often met with ire and outright disdain. Earlier this year, id Software removed Denuvo from Doom Eternal following a mass outcry by the playerbase. Denuvo has also been linked to being a significant cause of performance issues across PC games.
While Dragon Quest Builders 2 is now Denuvo free, the service will still continue to be a part of the PC gaming landscape. Even recent releases have the software attached. Months before its recent launch, Sony confirmed that Death Stranding would have Denuvo on its release earlier this month.
While the removal of Denuvo means little in the way of piracy considering Dragon Quest Builders 2 was cracked not long after launch, the change is still welcomed by players.
