  • The single-player action RPG is a departure from many other games in the franchise, though fighting game fans can look forward to the release of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero in October.
  • Some fans hope that Dragon Ball GT content will be added in future updates for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

After more than four and a half years on the market, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is still surpassing sales milestones, recently eclipsing eight million copies sold. Even with one Dragon Ball game released after Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and another on the horizon, the action RPG remains popular among fans of the late Akira Toyiyama's work.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was originally released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in January 2020. Subsequent ports have resulted in versions for Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia in 2021 and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2023. Separating itself apart from the formula used in many other games in the Dragon Ball franchise, the title is a single-player action RPG, though Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot still has a large roster of playable characters familiar to fans of the series.

RPG Elements in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Have an Obvious Source of Inspiration

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero has been revealed to feature a mechanic that evokes the IP's popular RPG outing, but this connection could go deeper.

Sharing the news via Twitter, the official Dragon Ball Games account announced on July 4 that more than eight million copies of Kakarot have been sold since its initial release in 2020. While newer ports of the game have likely accounted for its enduring success, the developers have continued to add content through Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's Season Pass and DLC packs, letting players experience even more of Goku's story.

More Good Things Are Coming From Dragon Ball

Even with the continued success of Kakarot, publisher Bandai Namco isn't resting on its laurels when it comes to the Dragon Ball franchise. Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO is planned for release on October 11, reviving the classic Budokai Tenkaichi fighting game style that has been riding a wave of popularity among fans since its initial introduction in 2005. Over 90 playable characters have been announced for Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, including character fusions, and Bandai Namco have kept fans interested with frequent trailers revealing more additions to the roster. The upcoming title will cover a significant chunk of the franchise's timeline, from Dragon Ball Z's early days stretching into Dragon Ball Super.

As for Kakarot, fans are still looking forward to future content coming to the action RPG. Some people responding to the Twitter thread hope to see content added from Dragon Ball GT, the often-overlooked 1996 anime series that was the first Dragon Ball anime not directly adapted from Toriyama's manga works. Many others have simply celebrated the sales milestone and expressed excitement about what's still to come.
