Highlights

  • Gohan Beast may be the strongest character in the Dragon Ball multiverse, with immense power and the ability to be felt light-years away, but fans haven't seen enough of him to give him this title.
  • Vegeta's Ultra Ego form has ultimate offensive power, but its lack of refinement and defense make it less viable against stronger opponents.
  • Goku's Ultra Instinct technique, tailored through one-on-one training with Whis, may be the strongest of all the Saiyans, but he is not the strongest non-divine character in the multiverse, as Black Frieza surpasses him with just one blow.

One would assume that after 40 years of going strong, the new characters and transformations introduced in the Dragon Ball franchise would eventually hit a ceiling that just can't be surpassed. However, this has not exactly been the case, as every new arc seems to raise the stakes by introducing a villain who is somehow more powerful than all those who came before which, in turn, forces the heroes to get stronger as well.

However, with all that is known about the Dragon Ball franchise, fans often wonder who the definitive strongest character in the series truly is. Despite even most of the weaker characters having enough power to potentially destroy planets, some characters just exist on top of everyone else, so, let's take a look at which character (excluding Gods and Angels) is the strongest in the entire multiverse!

Gohan Beast Holds The Most Potential Of All Saiyans

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero – Son Gohan Beast

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

Debut Date

June 11, 2022

Creator

Akira Toriyama

In the promotional material for the movie, Akira Toriyama called Beast Gohan a form that perhaps makes him stronger than everyone else, and his power was on full display in both the movie and the manga, where he makes very short work of the extremely powerful Cell Max. Though his appearance is very brief, his power is so immense that Goku and Vegeta feel it from Beerus' Planet, which was many light-years away.

Gohan is actually stronger than anyone... or so it's said, but lately, he hasn't really gotten a chance to shine.

Can He Really Be The Strongest?

Though Beast Gohan's power is certainly immense and has shot the Saiyan up to the highest tiers of strength, it is still too early to say whether he may be the strongest mortal in the multiverse. Defeating Cell Max and having his Ki signature read from light-years away are truly incredible feats, but fans just haven't seen enough of him to give him this title.

Chapter 101 teases the eventual reunion between Goku and his sons, and it primes the next chapter to be the one where Goku finally tests the true strength of Beast Gohan. Here, fans will get an answer to the real potential of Gohan's exclusive new form but until then, however, Gohan cannot hold the title of the strongest in the multiverse.

Ultra Ego Vegeta Has The Ultimate Offensive Power

Vegeta in Ultra Ego Form

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 74, "Vegeta Vs. Granolah"

Debut Date

July 20, 2021

Creator

Toyotarou

Granolah was able to make short work of Goku's Ultra Instinct, so fans were surprised when Vegeta, in his new Ultra Ego form, used the Destroyer's technique and overpowered the Cerealian for quite a while. This meant that, for a brief time, Vegeta's Ultra Ego was even stronger than Goku's Mastered Ultra Instinct, and even though he eventually succumbed to his injuries, he forced Granolah to use his full power, which ended up almost killing them both.

A God of Destruction taught me power derived solely from instinct is unbounded.

What Makes Vegeta's Ultra Instinct Stand Out?

Despite Ultra Ego's awesome power, it does not come without any side effects. Due to the recency of his unlocking of the technique and the lack of training he has with it, Ultra Ego is a very unrefined form. The distinguishing aspect of the transformation is its ability to absorb damage and use it to make Vegeta's next attack even more powerful, but his lack of refinement makes this ability a double-edged sword.

If Vegeta trains his body to become far more resilient and durable, or even if he simply chooses which attacks to tank and which ones to dodge, Ultra Ego will become far more viable against stronger opponents. A perfected version of the form would put Vegeta in the conversation of the strongest in the multiverse, but for now, the form lacks sufficient defense.

Ultra Instinct Goku Is The Perfect Martial Artist

Dragon Ball Super Ultra Instinct Goku

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super, episode 110, "Goku Enkindled! The Awakened One's New Ultra Instinct!"

Debut Date

October 7, 2017

Creator

Akira Toriyama

Ultra Instinct is the technique of the Angels and is so difficult that even most Destroyer Gods can't use it. This technique prioritizes finesse and martial prowess, as the user's body allows them to evade danger automatically without even thinking about it. Goku has seen many iterations of Ultra Instinct since its debut and has settled on his unique 'True Ultra Instinct' form as the one that best suits him, allowing him to use the technique with the power ups from his Saiyan emotions.

The ultimate technique, which severs the link between consciousness and body, allowing one to dodge any attack subconsciously.

Can He Really Be The Strongest?

Of all the Saiyans, Goku's current state of Ultra Instinct is quite possibly the strongest of them all. This is because he is the one who has had the most time with this technique and, has also been undergoing one-on-one training with Whis. Under the Angel's tutelage, Goku has tailored the technique to himself

However, Goku is still not the strongest non-divine character in the multiverse yet, as that title belongs to the most iconic enemy in the entire franchise. Even though he has honed his body to the limit with Ultra Instinct and trained under Whis himself, one character outshines him.

Black Frieza Is The Strongest Mortal In The Multiverse

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 The Case for Black Frieza

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 87, "The Universe's Strongest Appears"

Debut Date

August 20, 2022

Creator

Toyotarou

Black Frieza's strength was incredible, as he was able to defeat Gas in just a single hit, who was taking on Goku and Vegeta in their strongest forms along with Granolah. However, he proved to be nothing but fodder for the Frost Demon, who then proceeded to knock Vegeta and Goku out in their Ultimate Forms at blistering speeds, cementing himself as being in an entirely different league. Though the title of strongest was contested, Black Frieza's appearance cast aside all doubts.

While you two were having fun on this punt planet, I managed to surpass you.

Black Frieza Might Be the Strongest in the Multiverse?

Black Frieza's time in the series has been extremely brief, as he only appears in the final chapter of the Granolah arc. Because of this, his true power remains a mystery, as does pretty much everything else about him. All that is known is that despite Vegeta and Goku being the strongest that they have ever been by wielding divine techniques, they don't even come close to Frieza, who was able to defeat them both with just one blow.

While it hasn't been shown, it is still reasonable to assume that other characters from the Tournament of Power, such as Jiren and Toppo, have continued their training and are even more powerful than before. Still, though, they will likely not surpass Black Frieza's strength, as he is by far the strongest character in the multiverse, with some assuming he is even stronger than Beerus!

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
