The Dragon Ball franchise is well-known for introducing some of the most powerful characters in the anime universe. What proves the status of Dragon Ball characters as some of the strongest beings in the anime universe is the very fact that to evaluate the strength of an anime (especially shone) protagonist fans often compare them with Goku first. Akira Toriyama took the level of strong characters up a notch with the launch of Dragon Ball Super and introduced characters more powerful than preexisting characters in the franchise.

Toriyama decided to even include gods in the Dragon Ball Super, but there is one new character that can even outdo some of the gods, Jiren. Jiren currently sits in the top tier of the most powerful characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. He was the main antagonist of the Universe Survival saga, and the saga turned out to be pretty because of him. But there are a lot of things that the fans don't know about Jiren.

Jiren's Origins

Jiren

Jiren also known as Jiren the Gray is the strongest member of the Pride Troopers, a team of heroes working under the god of destruction, Belmond, of the Universe 11. Even though a mortal, Jiren could be considered to be someone worthy of being called a demigod because of his god-like strength and the fact that he's the only mortal who has outclassed his universe's god of destruction. Jiren is a humanoid with a calm demeanor with a well-defined muscular build and a strong sense of justice. He has a set of principles that he religiously follows except he has got a wish to which he can even sacrifice his beliefs and principles. He is known to be considered one of the strongest mortals in the entire multiverse in the Dragon Ball franchise. There is one pretty commendable thing about him that is he does not kill his enemies, he captures them but never kills them.

Jiren has lived a very tragic life as his parents were killed by an unknown demon from his universe when he was just a kid. He was saved by future teacher Gicchin, and he trained under the latter to become. Gicchin and his other students eventually fought the demon and died. Jiren's remaining friends gave up all hope to defeat the demon and avenge their dead friends and teacher. This resulted in Jiren losing the will to ever trust anyone, and he began living a life of a loner. Strength was the only thing that remained real for him because to him strength reflected justice as it is absolute. However, he ended up becoming a member of the Pride Troopers after Belmond was drawn to him because of the former's strength. It was Gicchin who convinced and encouraged Jiren to ultimately join the Pride Troopers. Even after his teacher's death, Jiren kept training hard to keep increasing his strength and became the only mortal that even the gods of destruction cannot beat.

Overwhelming Power

Jiren at his full power in Dragon Ball Super's Tournament of Power

Watching Jiren fight an opponent like Goku who can press his buttons is complete bliss. Jiren was weak throughout his childhood and much of his adolescence, but he kept training pushing his limit and became extraordinarily strong. His mere presence is so powerful that people around him get overwhelmed by it. Jiren's fighting style tilts toward the defensive as let waits for his opponents to approach him with whatever they have got in their arsenal. He keeps his mind and body calm even amidst a violent and gruesome fight which is one of his greatest strengths. His is one of the most powerful Ki(s) which helps with and enhances his attacks.

The attacks that he uses are basic but pack a lot of power. He uses special moves like Ki blasts, energy punches, invisible eye blasts, etc. His instincts are top-notch as evident from the moment when he did not bother to dodge Katchi Katchin's high-speed movement as he analyzed the situation pretty quickly and understood that they would not hit him. Whis even mentioned that Jiren's potential remains incalculable as he keeps getting better the more he struggles. Jiren did not budge even after Goku went Ultra Instinct to fight him. Jiren is similar to Goku as they both have the rule to use only the amount of strength that the situation requires.

Jiren's future in the Dragon Ball Super is still blurry as Akira Toriyama proceeded with two new sagas in the manga. However, the two Dragon Ball Super movies - DBS: Broly and DBS: Super Hero mentioned Jiren in flashbacks and conversations. Fans are eager to see Jiren in action again as they know Jiren is only going to get even stronger than before when he makes a return to the series. After all, he deserves a rematch with everyone's favorite Saiyan Son Goku but what would be even better is to watch him go one on one against possibly the strongest Saiyan in the Dragon Ball multiverse, Broly.
