Highlights

  • Super Vegeta is an advanced form of Super Saiyan achieved through intense training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
  • Vegeta's pride led him to stay in this form, showcasing increased power and speed, easily defeating Semi-Perfect Cell.
  • Despite its power, Super Vegeta has not been seen for years due to newer, stronger transformations like Super Saiyan Blue and Ultra Instinct.

Dragon Ball's Super Saiyan transformation is monumental, as Goku's transformation set off a chain reaction of expanding on the power's limits at the time. Vegeta became the third Saiyan we'd see achieve the power of a Super Saiyan, and his skill and power would only skyrocket. However, during the Cell Saga, Vegeta introduces the different grades of Super Saiyan one can achieve, becoming stronger by a few more levels and exhibiting a lot of strength in the process. This showed a different stage and advanced form of the transformation important to Dragon Ball.

This form came to be dubbed as Super Vegeta, and the form itself has a lot more nuance than many people give it credit for. However, what exactly is the form on a fundamental level, and what are its strengths and weaknesses? At the same time, why is it not seen anymore?

The Grades To Be Achieved

Dragon Ball - Super Vegeta Cocky

The form comes from Vegeta, no doubt, but why and what is it in general? To put it rather simply, the Super Vegeta transformation is the result of Vegeta's intense training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with Future Trunks. This transformation is simple in execution but also rather interesting as a result when considering everything we now know about the Super Saiyan transformations, since it's effectively pushing Ki into every nerve of the body. The result of this is that the body turns into what is known as Super Saiyan Grade 2, with Vegeta's body bulking up more than before, along with its increased speed and power.

I...am Super Vegeta!

It may be a different form, but it is also an advanced stage of Super Saiyan overall, which Vegeta discovered first and experimented with. During the battle with Semi-Perfect Cell, Vegeta used the power to utterly decimate the bio-android with efficiency and ease, showing that this form was viable even back in its first introduction without any drawbacks. The interesting thing to note here is that while Trunks also learned to use this form as seen with the Super Trunks form, Vegeta is the only one to have stayed in his Super Vegeta form for his own sake as well as for his own pride. The reason for the naming of Super Vegeta is mostly egocentric, but it does allow for easy naming, considering that Vegeta's pride at the time had a huge boost due to becoming stronger than Fused Piccolo and Goku at the time.

Why We Haven't Seen This Form

And The Possible Benefits

Dragon Ball - Super Vegeta Smirk

While Super Vegeta is ultimately a form that is iconic in the Cell Saga, only behind Gohan's transformation into Super Saiyan 2, the difference between this form and Super Saiyan 2 is that one is a limit-break and a different transformation that goes beyond Super Saiyan's stages and grades. This could be one of the many reasons why Super Saiyan Grade 2, and by extension, Super Vegeta, has not been seen for years since its debut. The form may theoretically be possible with the other transformations, including Super Saiyan 2, but there is almost no need to anymore now that there are ways to get stronger transformations instead. After all, with Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue, and Ultra Instinct; SUuper Vegeta is a product of an old arc as well as a victim to the power creep issue that has plagued Dragon Ball for the majority of its run.

However, this doesn't mean the transformation may not find some use in the future. After all, there is the possibility that grades of different transformations may be explored within different characters and transformations. Super Saiyan Blue is still an old reliable for the Saiyan Prince, and it uses God Ki all the same. Vegeta could do the same process of suffusing his nerves with God Ki to replicate the same effects of Super Vegeta for a necessary boost in power and speed if he needs it. Of course, there is no guarantee that this transformation may return at all, but it will always be considered an interesting extension of what it meant to be Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball, before Super Saiyan 2 came to exist.
