Highlights

  • Despite the near extinction of the Saiyan race, their incredible power is evident as they can destroy planets effortlessly.
  • The Saiyans have the potential to surpass the Gods of Destruction through refining their unique character-specific transformations.
  • Fusion, a technique that combines the power of two individuals, can result in a powerhouse that surpasses the strength of its component parts.

The Saiyans from Dragon Ball are widely regarded to be the ultimate warrior race in the franchise. Despite this claim, only 9 Saiyans remain in Universe 7 due to Frieza wiping out the rest of their race and planet, and even from these 9, only 4 are pure-blooded Saiyans. Vegeta's brother Tarble, however, has no interest in fighting and can't even go Super Saiyan. Though the race itself barely exists anymore, the sheer strength they hold is quite apparent as the adults boast the power to destroy entire planets on a whim.

This incredible power is still eclipsed by that of Beerus and the other Gods of Destruction. No matter how strong our heroes may have gotten so far, it is implied that they have not yet reached the level of most, if not all, of the Gods of Destruction. However, the Saiyans are infamous in the world of Dragon Ball as having the most potential for growth and strength, so here are a few ways that they can surpass the Gods.

Refining Ultimate Forms

Dragon Ball seems to be going in a very interesting direction when it comes to the transformations unlocked by the characters. Instead of having a direct and fixed line of Super Saiyan transformations that had been the norm during the entire run of Dragon Ball Z, Super seems to dip into giving all the main Z-Fighters their own, character-specific transformations that are unique only to them that play on the strengths of the corresponding character.

For example, Goku's brand-new True Ultra Instinct form sees him fully integrate the technique into his Saiyan heritage, mixing his Saiyan powers with his skillful martial arts. On the other hand, Vegeta has unlocked his Ultra Ego form. This transformation is the perfect one for the Prince as it makes full use of his fighting style as a brawler who prioritizes offensive output way more than defensive measures, taking damage to get stronger.

While we haven't seen much of Beast Gohan and Legendary Super Saiyan Broly, they too seem to be working on the defining traits of both characters. The next step in Dragon Ball is the refinement of these transformations instead of unlocking new ones all the time. This ensures that each of these transformations will remain relevant and won't eventually become useless, as is what happened with Super Saiyan God.

This also allows for the characters to train rigorously to perfect these transformations, eventually mastering them to a level of precision that can reach the Gods of Destruction. In the case of Goku and Vegeta, their transformations are suited to divine techniques that are used by the Angels and Gods, and it can be implied that these two will eventually take these positions themselves.

Fusions

In Dragon Ball, no technique comes close to the overall power of the warriors born from fusion. These fighters are born from the merger of two individuals and when these characters fuse, their power levels are also merged within a single character and then further multiplied, birthing an ultimate powerhouse that is stronger than either of the two who made them.

Though there are multiple ways to perform fusion, the two main ways it has been shown in the series are the Potara Earrings and the Metamoran Fusion Dance. This concept was first seen when Trunks and Goten fused into Gotenks by doing the Fusion Dance in the Majin Buu saga and then again when Goku and Vegeta used the Potara Earrings to form Vegito. Later on in 2018's Dragon Ball Super: Broly, we would see them performing the Fusion Dance to merge into Gogeta.

The warriors born from fusions are far more powerful than either of the characters that make them up, as Gogeta explained in the movie that their powers are not only added up but significantly magnified on top of that. Since both fusions essentially do the same thing, Goku and Vegeta performing them in their ultimate forms would put them on a level that is far beyond anything we have ever seen in the franchise. Fans of the series have already begun to theorize how these fusions would play out, with 'Ultra Vegito' and 'Ultra Gogeta' taking all the strengths of Goku and Vegeta's ultimate forms and canceling out all the weaknesses.

Another fusion that would not only reach the level of the Gods but probably leave them in the dust is a fusion between Gohan and Broly. Both of these Saiyans are known to have latent potential that eclipses that of even Goku and Vegeta. When taking their rate of growth and mixing Broly's Legendary Super Saiyan with Gohan's Beast transformation, the ensuing fusion would be an absolute destructive force that would scare even the strongest of characters, being able to grow in battle so rapidly that even Ultra Gogeta/Vegito may have trouble keeping up.

Another, often overlooked, aspect of fusion is the combination of techniques that result from it. As seen with Vegito's Final Kamehameha or Gogeta's Big Bang Kamehameha (not canon yet), the fusions not only have the ability to masterfully use the techniques of both individuals, but they can also mix these techniques to form moves with unparalleled destructive capabilities. On top of this, fusions can also use extremely powerful new moves that are unique to them, such as Gogeta's Stardust Breaker or Vegito's Spirit Sword.

Divine Saiyan Training

Goku and Vegeta Super Saiyans Dragon Ball

At the end of the day, no one understands training with Saiyans quite like the Saiyans. Throughout the run of Dragon Ball Super, Goku and Vegeta had constantly been training with one another and in doing so, they were able to bring out strength in themselves that they couldn't even have imagined. This allowed them to unlock the Super Saiyan Blue transformation that became their default transformation in the series.

Now, with Goku being trained in Ultra Instinct by Whis and Vegeta being trained in the power of the Gods by Beerus, the level that they can reach by mixing their divine training with the strengths of the Saiyan race is incredible to think about. Bringing Broly and Gohan into the same boat and training them with the best teachers would greatly increase the overall strength of Universe 7 as a whole. With all their new abilities and transformations unlocked, the Saiyans can spar with each other even more, finally perfecting their techniques and in doing so, also make their allies even stronger.
