With Dragon Ball Super, the story of Goku and his friends and families expands into the entire universe, galaxies, and multiverses. Here our heroes encountered different species with different customs and values. Some of them are quite friendly while others are incredibly hostile.

Considering how vast the space actually is, it makes sense to assume that it is basically a lawless area out there. After all, from the universe-spanning colonizers like Frieza and his organization to some small groups like the Heeters, countless criminals are roaming the universe without a care in the world. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. There is actually an organization that dedicates itself to preserving law and order throughout the galaxy. They are called the Global Patrol, and here’s everything that you need to know about them.

What is the Galactic Patrol?

Dragon Ball Super Goku Merus Jaco

In the simplest terms, the Galactic Patrol is the space police force. They are an organization that focuses on protecting the citizens of the galaxy by catching the criminals who always break the law in the name of pursuing profit for themselves.

This organization has been a staple to the story of Dragon Ball Super. However, they were actually introduced long before Dragon Ball Super hit the shelves. The Galactic Patrol as we know it today was first introduced back in 2013, in a stand-alone story called Jaco the Galactic Patrolman.

The story of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman is centered around a Galactic Patrol officer named Jaco. He is entrusted with a mission to look into an alien from a hostile race that secretly enters a young planet called Earth. That alien is none other than baby Goku.

Once Jaco arrives on Earth, it doesn’t take long for him to be distracted by so many wonderful new things that he hasn’t seen before. That being said, he also saves some citizens from petty criminals such as purse snatchers and drunk drivers. Interestingly enough, he ends up spending some time with Bulma’s family and falls in love with cheese and milk, forgetting all about his mission.

A Diverse Organization

Carefree officers aside, as an organization that spans the entire galaxy, the Galactic Patrol has thousands of employees who come from different planets and different species. This organization is led directly by the king of Universe 7’s Milky Way galaxy, a yet-to-be-named man who comes from a species known as Octo.

According to Jaco, although the Galactic Patrol accepts members from any species in the galaxy, everybody who wants to join the force has to undergo grueling exams first. In doing so, they ensure only the best and the brightest can become a Galactic Patrol. At least that’s how it is in Jaco’s mind.

Only a handful of the privileged chosen people have the right to become members. When I applied, they were recruiting five new members, and nine people applied for the position.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Galactic Patrol

Dragon Ball Super Goku Galactic Patrol

The main duties and responsibilities of the Galactic patrol are actually quite straightforward. They strive to uphold the law and order, protect innocent citizens, and catch as many bad guys as possible. So for all intent and purposes, the Galactic Patrol is akin to a space police.

The Space Police

Dragon Ball Super Galactic Prison

As the space police, the Galactic Patrol’s officers are responsible for certain sectors of the universe. A regular officer, such as Jaco, will usually take on two or three sectors consisting of fairly peaceful planets, like Earth. While a more experienced and accomplished officer, such as Merus, can cover as many as 150 sectors, consisting of problematic planets and crime-infested regions.

Every officer patrols their designated area alone. Every single one of them has their own aircraft and they are also fully equipped with the tools and weapons needed to conduct their job properly. This allows them to respond to any distress signals or emergency requests as quickly as possible. If the job proves to be too difficult for a single officer, they will immediately request backup from HQ who will dispatch any nearby officers to their location.

The Galactic Patrol’s Biggest Weaknesses

Dragon Ball Super Galactic Patrol Members

The biggest weakness of the Galactic Patrol is simply the lack of manpower needed to cover something as vast as the galaxy. It’s great that somebody like Merus can cover so many sectors, but he shouldn’t have to do so. After all, no matter how incredible he is, he can’t be in two places at the same time. So more capable officers are clearly needed.

However, lowering their entrance exams for the sake of recruiting more people is not ideal either. Admitting any random people into their ranks will only add more potential casualties later on down the line.

And to be perfectly honest, being a member of Galactic Patrol is not really a popular profession. That’s why not many people want to join their force in the first place. Hopefully, Merus' excellent achievements will attract more people to join the Galactic Patrol.

Dragon Ball's Other World really helps the series stand out from other Shonen anime. Here's a closer look at how it works.

Notable Tools, Weapons, and Places

Dragon Ball Super Merus Attack

These are some of the tools and weapons that are given to every member of the Galactic Force, along with the most notable places of interest owned by this massive organization.

The Galactic Patrol’s Tools

Dragon Ball Super Galactic Patrol Ship Suit

Two of the most notable tools that tremendously help the Galactic Patrols to do their job properly are their signature aircraft and powered suit. The Galactic Patrol’s ships are among the fastest in the galaxy. Furthermore, their suit protects them from physical attacks and enhances their strength, while the boosted boots allow them to fly.

The Galactic Patrol’s Weapons

Dragon Ball Super Galactic Patrol Weapons

Every member of the prestigious Galactic Patrol is equipped with a non-lethal stun gun. One shot is all it takes to paralyze the most brutal criminals. For powerful opponents that can withstand the stun gun, such as Moro, the Galactic Patrol can shoot gel-like substances from their arm guard. This substance will trap and restrict the movement of the target.

The Galactic Patrol’s Most Important Locations

Dragon Ball Super Galactic Patrol HQ Prison

The most notable places owned by the Galactic Patrol are their massive headquarters and the highly-secured Galactic Prison. None of these structures are located on any particular planet. They both float freely in space. This means it’s possible to move these two important places to other secured locations in case of emergencies.

As the space police, the Galactic Patrol is involved in the pursuit and subsequent arrest of most of the villains in Dragon Ball Super, such as Moro and the Heeters. Considering how Goku and the rest of the cast focus more on matters outside of the Earth nowadays, it is safe to assume that the Galactic Patrol will appear more frequently in the future.

Dragon Ball Super is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
