The Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero character roster continues to grow, as new magazine scans from Japan indicate characters like Beerus, Whis, Gohan, Videl, and Trunks will be playable in-game. Though not yet officially announced worldwide by Bandai Namco, the scans suggest that Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero will draw both from popular and recent major characters as well as from the deep well of story arcs present in the Dragon Ball multiverse.

Dragon Ball is a massive franchise, and over the decades of its existence, virtually every character players could ask for has been made playable in one game or another. Thus, among fans, seeing an obscure favorite join the roster of a new game is less a matter of "if" than "when." For its part, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero appears to be aiming for a truly expansive roster, confirming a number of classic fighters and fan favorites.

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero: 5 Non-Canon Forms That Should Be Included

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero will have the perfect opportunity to include some interesting, non-canon forms once it finally is released.

The latest images from Japan's V-JumpMagazine also appear to underscore that mindset, indicating characters from Dragon Ball Super, as well as a few from a classic series story arc, will be part of the playable stable. Screenshots of V-Jump posted by Twitter user SLO suggest that both Beerus, the God of Destruction for Universe 7, and Whis, his formidable attendant, will be in the roster, appearing much as they did in Dragon Ball Super.

New Magazine Scans Suggest Beerus, Future Gohan, and More Coming to Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero

The Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero characters revealed by V-Jump range from more recent additions like those from Dragon Ball Super to character variants from stories familiar to even the oldest fans.

Dragon Ball Super

  • Beerus
  • Whis

Dragon Ball Z (Majin Buu Saga)

  • Son Gohan
  • Videl

Dragon Ball Z (Future Timeline)

  • Trunks (Sword)
  • Future Gohan

Son Gohan appears as he does during the Majin Buu Saga, wearing a purple uniform. Meanwhile, Gohan's wife, Videl, sports a cropped hairstyle and the same outfit she wore after Gohan idly suggested she cut her hair. Videl's screenshot shows her using her signature Desperado Rush move, while Gohan uses what appears to be a new power (or a renamed existing move).

A third photo block from the same issue shows that Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero will also pull from the "Future" story arc by adding both Future Gohan and Trunks (Sword). "Future" refers to the home timeline of the sword-wielding Trunks (sometimes called "Future Trunks"). In that timeline, Future Gohan was left as the last line of defense after the Androids killed the Dragon Team and devastated Earth. Gohan mentored Trunks and fought back against the Androids despite only having the use of his right arm. Future Gohan was also playable in the final DLC of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Screenshots of Trunks (Sword) and Future Gohan show both their normal and Super Saiyan variants.

It's fun to see just how many new and returning characters might be confirmed for Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. Fans of the franchise have been demanding a current-generation successor to the venerable Budokai Tenkaichi design template, and Bandai Namco appears poised to try to meet that need with Sparking Zero.
