  • Gohan and Broly's potential to reach the highest tier of power may lead to them replacing Goku and Vegeta as the new strongest duo.

Dragon Ball is a series that puts power above all else. Ever since the start of the franchise, the Z-Fighters have occupied a level of strength for a certain amount of time, only to be outclassed by a new villain who is somehow even more of a threat than all others who have come before, prompting the heroes to train harder and become even stronger than they were before.

Throughout the series, Goku and Vegeta have routinely been the ones to do this. Due to this, they have now become the most iconic and strongest duo in Dragon Ball Super. However, with the inclusion of Broly's Legendary Super Saiyan and Gohan's recent Beast form, many in the community believe that these 2 will surpass Goku and Vegeta as the newest and strongest duo in the franchise, so let's see if this is true.

When it comes to feats of strength, Gohan and Broly both have some of the most incredible moments to date, even when considering that the latter of the two is a very recent addition to the series' official canon. Firstly, both of these characters hold within them the greatest potential of anyone in the entire Saiyan race. This gives them access to incredible power that they can simply unlock by tapping into their inherent energy, whereas Goku and Vegeta have had to train extensively for many years to do so.

Though many fans of the franchise say that this is quite an unearned and contrived way of getting power, it has been this way in Dragon Ball for years. Ever since the Namek Saga, Gohan's untapped potential has always been great, and, upon finally unlocking it, he has often been the one to make a difference in many situations. After all, it was he who had defeated Perfect Cell and was also the only one capable of damaging Super Buu for a time.

With Gohan and Goku testing their strength in Super's latest chapter, could the series fall back into old habits with Vegeta?

Broly, on the other hand, has only been canon since the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly in 2018. In this movie, he quickly reached the level of Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta in his first proper fight, showing that despite his lack of formal training, Broly was truly a force of nature that was to be reckoned with, requiring the power of Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta to put him down for good. Even when looking at his non-canon appearances in the various Dragon Ball Z movies, it's quite clear that he has always been built up as a Saiyan with unmatched potential from the very start.

How Strong Are These Forms

Since his Legendary Super Saiyan form was enough to easily defeat both Goku and Vegeta's strongest non-divine forms, Broly quickly shot himself towards the top of the power rankings in the series. He is then joined by Gohan Beast, who has just initiated his fight with Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku in Chapter 102 of the official Dragon Ball Super manga.

Ever since the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film came out in June 2022, Gohan Beast has been at the forefront of discussion in the community. In a statement made by Akira Toriyama in the promotional material for the movie, Gohan Beast was stated to be perhaps the most powerful character out of them all, and the equal nature of his sparring match with Goku more than proves this.

Gohan is actually stronger than anyone... or so it's said, but lately, he hasn't reall gotten a chance to shine.

In their most powerful states, both Broly and Gohan are some of the strongest characters in the series. So, this makes them the perfect candidates to take over the mantle of the strongest duo from Goku and Vegeta, albeit with a little more training, which is what the story currently seems to be alluding to.

Where Is The Story Headed Now?

Saiyans

The hierarchy of power regarding the Saiyans is at quite an interesting point right now. Chapter 102 seems to be answering this question with Gohan Beast's spar with Ultra Instinct Goku, which has yet to reach its conclusion, but it shows the Saiyans on fairly equal footing. Because of this, Dragon Ball could be making Gohan reach a stage that is up there with Goku and Vegeta.

However, one aspect that many in the community are overlooking is the stakes that Broly has in this fight. More than just showing fans Gohan Beast's strength, this battle comes at a crucial point in Broly's story as well, where he has now come across another Saiyan with incredible potential who has also achieved a highly powerful state that was given birth through his rage, something that Broly is seeking to learn how to control.

The biggest thing that is hindering Broly's growth right now is his lack of ability to use his full power without giving in to his rage. Seeing Gohan, and potentially training with him on Beerus' planet, may finally unlock the answer that Broly needs to awaken his Legendary Super Saiyan form on a whim and, in doing so, can comfortably join Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan in the highest tier of power for mortals in Universe 7.

When this state is reached, there will be much more of an argument to be made about Gohan and Broly replacing the current protagonists as the strongest duo in the entire series. Because of the nature of who they are as characters, there can also be a nice theme of Goku and Vegeta ushering the new generation of Z-Fighters to take up their mantle, perhaps maybe even introducing a brand-new fusion into the series that would absolutely shake the foundations of the entire multiverse.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
