Highlights

  • Vegito proved his unmatched power against Super Buu and Goku Black's merged Zamasu.
  • Gogeta's canon debut in 2018 showcased his incredible strength against Broly.
  • Beerus remains the most powerful being in Universe 7, even surpassing the fusion characters.

Many debates have ravaged the Dragon Ball community over the years. While many of these discussions talk about various aspects of the story, most of them center around the strength of characters and why one may or may not be stronger than another. Some of the most discussed characters in these types of conversations are the incredibly powerful fusions between Goku and Vegeta, as well as the Destroyer Beerus.

Fittingly, the strength of the fusions is looked at as the apex of Saiyan power in Dragon Ball, which is why they are only used sparingly against opponents too tough for the heroes to beat. Beerus, on the other hand, is a God of Destruction and is widely thought of as the most powerful being in all of Universe 7. So, let's take a look at whether Gogeta or Vegito would be able to defeat Beerus.

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 268, "Union of Rivals"

Debut Date

June 28, 1995

Fusion Method

Potara Earrings

Vegito was the first fusion done by Goku and Vegeta and proved himself to be so powerful that even Super Buu, in his most powerful form, couldn't manage to land a scratch on him. Vegito bullied Super Buu and was just toying around with him until he got absorbed, which may just have been a part of his plan all along, as Goku and Vegeta managed to free everyone else trapped within Buu.

Hmmm... thought you were a little stronger than this but I guess I was wrong. Are you gonna make me take this fight seriously or should I just go take a nap?

The second time Vegito was summoned was back in the Goku Black arc, where he took on a merged Zamasu. This version of the villain proved to be far superior to both Goku and Vegeta, prompting them to fuse into Vegito, who fought the God on equal footing. Many even believe that Vegito had the upper hand in the fight but ultimately could not finish it due to his power being so great that it overrode the timer of the Potara Earrings. Still, this made for an incredible showing as Vegito managed to greatly damage an invulnerable deity.

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn

Debut Date

March 4, 1995

Fusion Method

Metamoran Dance

Gogeta's first couple of appearances were non-canon, as he made his debut in the Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn movie and his anime debut was in his Super Saiyan 4 form in GT. Both times, though, he was unmatched in his might. In the movie, he had a very brief appearance, in which he destroyed Janemba in a matter of seconds, whereas his Super Saiyan 4 form in GT embarrassed Omega Shenron and fixed all the damage the villain did to the planet.

Every force you create has an echo. Your own bad energy will be your undoing!

Gogeta finally made his canon debut in 2018 in the fight against Broly, where he managed to do what his two halves could not. Not only did he come close to killing Broly in his Super Saiyan Blue form, but he also managed to do it with ease before the fusion was even close to running out. This battle was so destructive that Gogeta and Broly got cast into another dimension when their attacks collided, showing just how powerful these characters are.

The Strength Of Beerus

Dragon Ball Super - Beerus's Hakai Technique

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

Debut Date

March 30, 2013

Beerus made his debut back in 2013, and his inclusion into the story brought with it a whole new paradigm of power in the universe. His power was so great that he was able to destroy half of a planet with a mere tap of his finger and would later go on to defeat Super Saiyan God Goku in an equal fight, after which it was revealed that Beerus was using the bare minimum of his strength.

I'm a very generous God. But, there's one thing I absolutely cannot stand. And that is the insensitivity of people who won't give me my due respect!

Beerus's full power has never been shown, and he hasn't even really been in many combat situations in the first place. However, he came fairly close in the Dragon Ball Super manga, where he took on all the Gods of Destruction alone, awakening Ultra Instinct Omen and proceeding to defeat each of them. Toward the end, it was just him and Quitela left, which goes to show that even among the strongest beings in the multiverse, Beerus remains the most powerful among them.

The Fusions vs. The Destroyer God

Dragon Ball Super - Beerus

Despite the overwhelming power of both Vegito and Gogeta, Beerus exists in a realm of his own. This is more of a narrative choice than anything else, since Beerus serves to be more of a moving goalpost for the heroes, as his strength is what they aspire to achieve but still haven't been able to do so, even with their fusions. This does not mean that the fusions are in any way weak, as they still probably exist within the top 5 strongest mortals in the multiverse.

Verdict

However, the way that Dragon Ball power scaling works may just be enough to prove it. For example, Ultra Instinct Goku and Beast Gohan are stronger than Gogeta and Vegito were at the point they appeared in the story, due to the father and son having grown and unlocked powerful new forms. However, even with these new forms, they don't even exist within the same tier of power as Beerus as he still thinks little of their achievements.

For the longest time, fans believed that the fusions, with a Super Saiyan Blue power boost, could have taken on Beerus, and that would be something that should make sense too. However, Beerus is essentially a narrative device that will likely never be surpassed, so for that reason alone, Beerus would win against any character in Dragon Ball who isn't Zeno or any one of the Angels!

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
