Dragon Age: The Veilguard is releasing in Fall 2024, and has showcased its full cast of companions in a new trailer. Though the gameplay premiere is scheduled for June 11, 2024, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has given players a first taste of what to expect in the next chapter of BioWare's fantasy franchise. It will feature seven companions, each representing a different faction or group in Thedas – such as the Veil Jumpers, Qunari, and even the Inquisition.

The trailer made its debut during the Xbox Games Showcase, and featured a significantly older Varric accompanied by scout Harding, a fan favorite character from Dragon Age: Inquisition. While Varric will not be returning as a companion, his role and ties with the Inquisition will likely serve to bridge the narrative of the third game with that of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. By contrast, Harding has been confirmed as the first featured companion in the next Dragon Age game, and will likely be a romance option for the player character.

The Reason Behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Name Change

BioWare had some good reasons for changing the name of their next game to Dragon Age: The Veilguard just days before its full summer reveal.

In addition to Harding, the new trailer for Dragon Age: The Veilguard revealed the other six companions that will accompany the player during their adventure in northern Thedas. Lucanis Dellamorte, a master assassin of the Antivan Crows, will also feature as a companion in the game, previously introduced in Tevinter Nights. Furthermore, The Veilguard is set to introduce Taash, the first female Qunari companion in the Dragon Age franchise, who is seen dual-wielding a pair of axes while facing off against a High Dragon.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Companions

  • Harding, the Scout
  • Neve, the Detective
  • Lucanis, the Mage Killer
  • Bellara, the Veil Jumper
  • Emmrich, the Necromancer
  • Davrin, the Warden
  • Taash, the Dragon Hunter

The trailer features the world of Dragon Age rendered under a new aesthetic that fans already find divisive, comparing it to games such as Overwatch or movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy. While a trailer in this format tends to not accurately represent in-game footage, players will be able to see the opening sequence of Dragon Age: The Veilguard on June 11, 2024. The upcoming gameplay video will be 15 minutes long, and will be posted on the official Dragon Age YouTube channel.

While not much is known about the new cast of characters beyond their names and general affiliations, it's quite possible that most (if not all) will be available as romance options in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. As opposed to Dreadwolf, the game's previous title, The Veilguard places an emphasis on one of BioWare's biggest strengths – companions and character writing. Despite going through several redesigns and delays over the years, fans will be able to finally play Dragon Age: The Veilguard some time in Fall 2024.
