Highlights

  • The Inquisitor from Dragon Age: Inquisition will return in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
  • Players will be able to make their choices from the previous game carry over to The Veilguard.
  • The upcoming RPG seemingly won't offer Dragon Age Keep support, but will instead let players choose what happened in the previous game during the character creation process.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will allow players to carry over their choices from the past entries in the franchise, BioWare has confirmed. But this continuity system will still be implemented much differently compared to the previous games, not least because Dragon Age: The Veilguard won't be reading any old save files.

The first gameplay footage from Dragon Age: The Veilguard was revealed on June 10. A day later, BioWare treated the upcoming RPG to an extended gameplay showcase. The 20-minute video offered fans a look at the introductory segment of the game, having been shared alongside the confirmation that the Inquisitor from Dragon Age: Inquisition will also feature in the 2024 sequel.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Addresses Long-Standing BioWare Criticism

Dragon Age: The Veilguard finally addresses one criticism that BioWare received often in previous games, including in the last Dragon Age.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Will Let Players Choose What Happened in the Previous Game

BioWare suggested that the return of the fan-favorite protagonist in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is being handled with a lot of thought, adding that players will be able to essentially recreate their character from the previous game. That goes for not just their appearance but also their background, including the choices they made all the way up to the end of Dragon Age: Inquisition. While the ability to carry over progress between games has been a series staple for over a decade, the way this feature will work this time around won't rely on reading save files, BioWare Game Director Corinne Busche told IGN.

Instead, Dragon Age: The Veilguard's character creator will allow players to choose what happened in the previous game. Busche says the developers are aware that not everyone will remember their choices from Inquisition, a game that could be pushing 11 by the time its sequel hits the market. That's why these choices will be presented through tarot cards that serve as a brief retelling of the 2014 adventure. Busche dubbed this feature "last time on Dragon Age."

The Dragon Age Keep service, which allows players to export their save files from the first two entries in the franchise in order to use them in Inquisition, hence appears unlikely to offer any kind of integration with The Veilguard. Nevertheless, there is currently no firm indication that BioWare plans to discontinue the web app anytime soon.

Asked about how many characters from the previous series installments are planned to return in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Busche said only "some" will be part of the game, without elaborating on the matter. The fourth mainline Dragon Age is currently waiting for a release date, though BioWare recently reiterated that the RPG is still targeting a fall 2024 launch. Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be available on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
