Sera of Dragon Age: Inquisition is a companion character that can only be romanced by female Inquisitors. She is the first-ever character in the series to be romance-locked for just female characters, and is a city elf with no love for the Dalish. While she may be immature at times, she has intelligence that is beneficial to the Inquisition, in terms of her archery skills, and her ties with the Friends of Red Jenny.

However, Sera is a character that is not loved by all fans. This is because Sera has a lot of issues against the Dalish, including Dalish Inquisitors. When she meets the Inquisitor for the first time, and they are Dalish, she reacts in disappointment. She sees the Dalish as "too elfy" and finds their traditions to be just plain wrong, as she is Andrastian. It is not unusual for a Dragon Age character to have strong opinions about religion, but Sera is the first companion that brings religion into a possible break-up scenario in a romantic relationship.

The Break-Up Scene

Sera upset in her room.

This is a scene that only can happen to Dalish female characters that romance Sera, and occurs only after completing the quest, "What Pride had Wrought." During that questline, players and the Inquisition get to explore an ancient temple to Mythal. They meet ancient elves and deal with the Well of Sorrows, which has all the knowledge of Mythal's worshippers in it. A lot is shown about elven gods and culture. After the quest is completed, Sera tells the Inquisitor that she thinks the ordeal is silly and all made up, and that the only true God is the Maker. What happened at the temple had to all be because of demons.

The Inquisitor can agree or ignore Sera's jabs at their Dalish culture. If the player chooses to defend their beliefs, by reminding Sera that they are Dalish and this is important to them, Sera doubles down and an argument begins. Sera will then believe the Dalish Inquisitor is trapped in the past, will not get over it, and chooses elves over people. She will ask the Inquisitor then to renounce the Dalish and their religion, to take back what they said about it being important to them. The Inquisitor has to choose between Sera and their culture. If the Inquisitor sticks to their guns, the romantic relationship is over.

The Most Brutal Break-Up In Dragon Age

Sera and the Inquisitor at Halamshiral.

Dragon Age does not shy away from hard break-ups. In fact, it is a series that is known for them, depending on player choices. In Dragon Age: Origins, Alistair can break up with a romanced non-human Warden after becoming King. In Dragon Age 2, breakups can happen depending on player choices and how much rivalry or friendship they have with a romanced character. Such breakups can result in having to kill your partner, like Fenris or Merrill. In Dragon Age: Inquisition, Solas breaks up with the Inquisitor no matter what choice they make, and Iron Bull will fake a relationship while plotting to kill the Inquisitor if they sacrificed his Chargers.

However, Sera's Dalish breakup tackles a very emotional tie to the player's character. It is a very real argument, with no Kings, mages, Dread Wolves, or brainwashed qunari warriors. What Sera argues with the Inquisitor is something that can be very much applied to real life. It is two people from very different backgrounds, and one wants the other to compromise who they are on behalf of their relationship. In comparison to the other breakups, it's quite personal and raw.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
