Highlights

  • Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is set to feature multiple regions, which could lead to some major companion returns from older Dragon Age games.
  • While characters like Varric and Solas are very likely to make a comeback, Fenris is also a possibility due to Tevinter's presence in the story.
  • Antiva and Rivain being featured means familiar faces such as Zevran and Isabela could rejoin the party in Dreadwolf.

As Dragon Age: Dreadwolf promises to be the series' most expansive game across the Tevinter Imperium and beyond, and the regions set to appear provide the perfect opportunity for fan-favorite companions to return. Via the new trailer revealed during 2023's Dragon Age Day, BioWare teased various regions planned for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, leading many fans to speculate if any familiar faces could be making a comeback. More specifically, with the known regions in mind, Dreadwolf may see companions from Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 make a comeback.

With Dragon Age: Inquisition referencing and even featuring past series characters, it seems inevitable that Dreadwolf will continue the trend, especially since the likes of Varric Tethras and Solas are all but confirmed to appear in the upcoming game. But with a lack of information regarding any other characters set to appear in Dreadwolf, it has been difficult to predict who else from across the series might make their return. However, Dreadwolf's game-changing multiple regions may be all that is needed to determine which classic companions could resurface in the upcoming Dragon Age game.

Characters Potentially Returning From Across Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's Multiple Settings

Characters With Potential Ties to Tevinter

The ending of Inquisition and its Trespasser DLC established a clear and ambitious scope for Dreadwolf, setting the stage for returning characters. While the Inquisitor is likely to have some involvement with Dreadwolf's story, much like Hawke did for Inquisition, other companions could include fellow Inquisition members like Dorian Parvus after the DLC confirmed he had taken a seat in the Magisterium. However, similar to other Dragon Age party members who returned in later games, those introduced in Inquisition may potentially take a backseat to Dreadwolf's newer companions, like Davrin the Grey Warden or the unknown Bellara.

Dreadwolf could instead bring back older characters that haven't been seen by players in over a decade, such as Fenris. Depending on his fate following Dragon Age 2, Fenris seems just as likely to return as Dorian, as his ongoing development as a former slave fugitive turned vigilante mercenary and distrust toward mages practically guarantees that he'll eventually cross the player's path in Dreadwolf sooner or later. But with the epilogue of Inquisition's DLC suggesting that elves are siding with Solas, there's every chance a returning Fenris joins the player as another of Dreadwolf's companions, or he allies with its villain instead.

Characters With Potential Ties to Antivan

Another elven character that could also return in Dreadwolf is Zevran Arainai, whose checkered past and ongoing conflict with the Antivan Crows could similarly steer him in the player's direction when they explore the Antiva region. This seems even more likely given that Zevran has ties to Varric and appeared in several war table operations during Inquisition, while Dreadwolf has teased that one of its new companions could be an Antivan Crow. But much like the possibility of Fenris coming back into the fold in Dreadwolf, Zevran's Dalish elven background could see him convinced to side with Solas.

Characters With Potential Ties to Rivain

Beyond Tevinter and Antiva, however, Dreadwolf also appears to be visiting Rivain, the last known location of Isabela who had become a self-appointed admiral with the Raiders of the Waking Sea, according to Varric in Inquisition. With ties to both Varric and Zevran, Isabela is another fan-favorite character that might return in Dreadwolf, especially when Rivain's culture and history regarding elves, magic, and religion might connect to or even complicate Solas' potential plans. Moreover, Dreadwolf has hinted that another of its key characters will come from Rivain, meaning this could be an early sign that Isabela will accompany the player once again.
