Highlights

  • Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will explore new regions in Thedas, possibly including characters from spin-off media like Tevinter Nights and Absolution.
  • Qwydion, a unique Qunari Mage from Absolution, may not appear as a companion in Dreadwolf, but her inclusion could bridge the gap between game releases.
  • The upcoming game will feature a female Qunari, potentially as a companion offering a fresh perspective on magic.

Set to be one of BioWare's biggest releases in years, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is the upcoming fourth entry in the studio's original fantasy RPG franchise. Venturing into regions of Thedas unseen in previous titles, it will act as the revival of the series after nearly a decade since Inquisition launched. While Dragon Age's video games have been on hold, however, there have been several instances of supplementary media being released during this period. While fans are divided on the true implications of these outings on the events of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, representing one character from the animated series Dragon Age: Absolution could make establishing these connections worthwhile.

As material like Tevinter Nights and Absolution has tided them over, fans have begun to speculate on whether the possible appearances of characters from these spin-offs in the next game are being set up.

There is a chance that familiar faces in the form of important mercenaries or Antivan Crows may factor into Dreadwolf, but few have made as much of a mark as the Qunari Mage, Qwydion. Seemingly a walking contradiction given the tenants of the Qun and the restrictive ways of her people, she has become one of the most popular members of the race despite only appearing in Absolution. She doesn't seem poised to appear as a companion in Dreadwolf when considering the art released for the game so far, but she could end up as one of the series' most recognizable characters if she ends up being included.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf could have the most interesting protagonist in the series if BioWare sticks to its promise about the character.

Tevinter's Political Situation and Dreadwolf's Possible Female Qunari Companion

Qunari History in Thedas is Likely to Make Them Important in Dreadwolf

With the game seemingly set primarily in Tevinter, there's almost guaranteed to be more insight into the nation's conflict with the Qunari of Par Vollen and Seheron outside the continent. Their rule during the Steel Age may have passed, but the order-obsessed race is still partially intent on retaking what they once ruled. A companion in the player's party during Dreadwolf would have to represent a more neutral disposition at least, and promotional art corroborates this potential character's attitude.

Dreadwolf's Qunari Woman Artwork Looks Nothing like Qwydion

In one of the pieces of concept art featuring possible future companions that was released during Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's long development, a mysterious Qunari is seen partially shrouded in shadow. Seemingly a Rogue, this woman wields two short blades with a scowl on her face. Apart from their different horns, these traits alone make it apparent that she is being shown to differ from Absolution's charming Qwydion. In featuring a relatively predictable archetype, however, this art also emphasizes just how unique a Mage like Qwydion truly is.

How Qwydion Could Be One of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's Most Memorable Companions

Qwydion is Unlike Any Other Known Qunari

They can be highly practical and orderly despite their penchant for violence, but the Qunari's treatment of their Mages is perhaps the most brutal and inhumane of all. They remove the tongues and sew shut the lips of those capable of magic, restricting their lives out of a fear that a Mage like Qwydion doesn't share. She is heavily implied to be a Vashoth instead of a Qunari, or a member of the species who was never raised under the rules of the Qun.

When coupled with her status as comedic relief in Absolution and her overall light-hearted disposition, it's clear that Qwydion's breaking of the typical Qunari mold is a major factor in her general popularity. Not only would she be one of the most unconventional magic users a DA party has had, but she would also be able to offer a wholly unique perspective on being a Mage while even potentially serving as a romance option. It's unclear if the stories set up in spin-offs will culminate in a big pay-off when Dreadwolf arrives but including Dragon Age: Absolution's Qwydion could be the perfect choice to bridge the gap between Dragon Age game releases.
