Highlights

  • Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will bring in an unassuming new protagonist to counter Solas.
  • Dreadwolf may lead to the destruction of the Veil and the Evanuris as the true villains. It's unclear how an unremarkable protagonist will defeat them.
  • The uniqueness of Dreadwolf's protagonist lies in being unremarkable, offering a fresh perspective and a creative storytelling opportunity.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf has seen many teasers over the past years since the release of Dragon Age: Inquisition. While the only protagonist it's had that can be considered "special" is the Inquisitor, the emphasis has been on the player character for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf being someone ordinary. This has been mentioned at the end of Dragon Age: Inquisition: Trespasser, teaser trailers, and in extra material like comics and short stories, with a special callout to the Inquisitor, mentioning that the protagonist will have "no glowing hand".

A New Threat in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf

Bringing in New People to Counter Solas

One of Solas' greatest advantages is that he's deeply familiar with the Inquisition's methods and agents, enabling him to counter the organization. As he kept his identity and his own methods a secret, the Inquisition and those opposing him don't have the same advantage. The best option to counter Solas is to bring in new people who Solas doesn't know, meaning he can't predict and counter them as easily. Presumably, the new protagonist of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will be this unknown quantity.

In order to be someone unknown, they need to be beyond the scope of who Solas considers important enough to keep track of, either personally or in his spy network. The emphasis that the protagonist won't have any special features also comes with the implication that they won't be obtaining any special power that sets them apart, such as a Grey Warden's resistance to the Blight or the Inquisitor's divine status and ability to close the rifts. That means there's a risk the protagonist doesn't feel as interesting as past characters.

A New Hero in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf

The True Threats to Thedas

This brings up the question of how Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's protagonist and story will resolve the issue of Solas, the Veil, and the Evanuris. It is very possible that the Veil will be destroyed in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and the Evanuris will become the true villains of the game, as the voice at the end of the Thedas Calls teaser wasn't Solas, and one of the characters refers to the "risen gods".

Comparing Previous Dragon Age Protagonists

The protagonists from the previous Dragon Age games were all uniquely equipped to fight the main antagonists. The Warden from Dragon Age: Origins was able to fight the Archdemon as a Warden. Although Hawke started out as a normal person, their experiences and connections set them on a path to becoming the Champion of Kirkwall. The Inquisitor also started out as a normal person, but became a mirror of Corypheus by obtaining the power he had sought. The protagonist of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's key factor appears to be that they're unremarkable and will stay unremarkable, but it's unknown how they'll actually defeat an entire pantheon of gods like that.

The Pros of Anonymity

One good thing about the protagonist being an unknown quantity and someone completely normal is that it'll be a break in the pattern of protagonists in Dragon Age and make the protagonist of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf stand out. The story of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's protagonist is likely to be very creative because of the restrictions placed on them. The protagonist is also likely to be unpredictable and from a faction that players haven't seen before in Dragon Age. Opening Thedas to the players and giving them something new is always a good thing and, and if BioWare gets this right, this unremarkable protagonist might be the most interesting one BioWare creates.
