Highlights

  • Dragon Age: Dreadwolf has been renamed to Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
  • The name change highlights the hero and their companions instead of the game's antagonist.
  • More will be revealed on June 11.

The next Dragon Age game is changing its title, as Dragon Age: The Veilguard is scheduled for a full reveal on June 11, 2024. Rumors about Dragon Age: Dreadwolf having its name changed have only recently begun to circulate, as many insiders claimed that not only would it make an appearance during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, but it would also forgo using Dreadwolf as its subtitle. Though this changes little in terms of what players can expect from the sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition, it does come as a bit of a surprise to many BioWare fans.

Dragon Age: Inquisition concluded its Trespasser DLC by allowing the players to hunt down and confront the Dread Wolf, who had set the events of the third game in motion long before its prologue. As such, the Dread Wolf's agenda was built to play a pivotal role in the next Dragon Age title, but it would seem that as the project evolved over the years, the narrative focus shifted in a different direction altogether.

Rumor: Dragon Age Dreadwolf Might Be Changing Its Name

According to reliable insiders, it seems Dragon Age: Dreadwolf could be announcing a brand new title rather soon.

As explained in the latest BioWare blog post, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf has been renamed into Dragon Age: The Veilguard to better reflect the narrative of the game. Instead of placing emphasis on what is assumed to be the main antagonist, The Veilguard chooses to honor its hero and the companions that will join the player on their adventure in northern Thedas. The blog post confirms that a gameplay showcase for Dragon Age: The Veilguard will debut on June 11, 2024, on the official Dragon Age YouTube channel. The full reveal will be 15 minutes long, and will feature the opening hours of the game.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard to Release an Official Gameplay Reveal on June 11, 2024

Though the project has been through several iterations in the past decade, the gameplay for the next Dragon Age title is a massive departure from its predecessors. As opposed to the tactical combat of Origins and Inquisition, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will instead embrace a more action-based style of gameplay, with party management taking inspiration from the Mass Effect games. While this will no doubt be controversial to many Dragon Age fans, the change in direction may end up being worthwhile if The Veilguard manages to evoke the widely praised combat of Mass Effect 3 and Andromeda.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will take place in the Tevinter Imperium and its surrounding nations. The player character will be joined by seven unique companions, each representing a different faction of Thedas – such as the Antivan Crows or the Qunari. The core tenets of Dragon Age as a franchise will be preserved in The Veilguard, as players will be able to establish meaningful connections with their companions, both in a platonic and romantic sense. Dragon Age fans will be able to find out more on June 11, 2024, during the official gameplay reveal. As for Dragon Age: The Veilguard's release date, the game is rumored to launch in Q1 2025.
