A Doom Eternal player has managed to configure their drum set to play the id Software first-person shooter using only a series of bass pedals. The Doom Eternal fan posted the results of his musical death machine to Reddit, with positive results in both demon-slaying and musicianship.

Doom Eternal is a notoriously challenging game. To beat back the hordes of the damned on the harder difficulty settings, you will need to have fast reaction times, solid aim, and a good understanding of the game's weapon switching mechanics; whereby a user switches very quickly between powerful weapons to maximize their damage output. Most would also say that you need a controller or a keyboard and mouse as well, but they have clearly been proven wrong.

While id Software's shooter has a well-established gameplay loop at this point, with users cycling through Doom Eternal's powerful weapons to crush their foes, Reddit user TheYuteThatDoot has posed an interesting question that could freshen things up a bit: "why not use da feets?" In his post on Reddit, TheYute suggested that he was "tired of using [his] hands for everything" and wanted to improve his experience by binding his weapon switching key binds to the bass pedals of his drum set.

TheYute explains the merits of this system in a YouTube video, where he breaks down what he calls 'BACON,' or bass pedal actuated controller (that's) obviously never been done before and shows some gameplay footage of him putting the system into practice, with surprisingly good results. While TheYute does use the bass pedals for weapon switching, he still appears to use a controller for Doom Eternal's movement and platforming, meaning that the system isn't as much of a hindrance as it would appear.

Although most users aren't going to take up the challenge of beating Doom Eternal with a series of drum pedals, TheYute has certainly proven it can be done. Not only that, the footage of his gameplay seems to suggest that it is somewhat viable, as handling weapon switching with your feet could technically free your hands up to solely focus on movement mechanics. More importantly, due to Doom Eternal's heavy bass-oriented soundtrack, composer Mick Gordon would likely agree with TheYute's contention that "playing DOOM with a DBL bass drum pedal... is apropos."

TheYuteThatDoot joins a long line of players beating difficult games with unconventional controller setups. Just last year, a Twitch streamer beat Dark Souls 3 without being hit, using only a Guitar Hero controller, and monsters should be wary if the two of them ever get together and form a band.

Doom Eternal is now available for PC, PS4, Switch, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are coming sometime this year.
