In Don't Starve, having a food source is crucial. Like every survival game, there are several elements that players need to keep track of, from hunger to health, and even sanity. Don't Starve is an unrelenting survival horror game where players must survive The Constant, a land riddled with dangerous mobs. But, with the right defenses and weaponry, players are able to move through the land with ease. The main concerns, however, are the drop of sanity and hunger as time goes on, so players should be prepared to catch themselves some food as quickly as possible.

While there are a variety of food sources throughout The Constant, some of the earliest means of food can be the most useful throughout the journey. Traps are a great way to capture animals and use its meat, and there are two traps in particular that can come in handy with this. While food is the main reason for using traps, there are also traps that can be used as defenses. This is how players can utilize these tools to help them survive a few more days.

Traps

Traps are a very easy craftable item and can save players a lot of trouble when trying to find some food. With only 6 Grass and 2 Twigs, players can make this item that lasts 8 uses in total. The main use for this item is for Rabbits, which are found in various biomes such as the Grasslands, Forests, and Savanna.

Players will notice holes in the ground, indicating where the Rabbits go at the end of the day. By placing a Trap near these holes, players will be able to catch them. Once killed, players will receive one morsel from them which is a great early game source of food, but can be used in various recipes towards the later part of the game. An additional way to help trap an animal is by adding food items as bait.

The trap will lose durability if it's set off, whether it catches something or not, but since they are incredibly easy to craft, it shouldn't be a problem having some on hand. Placing a decent amount at once can help players stock up on food too, so don't be shy when making these. Another great use for this item is when players are being chased by mobs, they can lure these hostile creatures into the trap, like Spiders for example.

Bird Traps

Similar to the regular traps, Bird Traps do exactly what the name says. By combining 3 Twigs and 4 Silk, players can use this item to catch birds. And to bait these creatures, players can place Seeds or Berries inside to hurry up the process, however it is not needed if players would rather use them for something else. Similar to the traps, players have up to 8 uses for this item, and it will use a durability when the trap is used, whether a bird is caught or not.

Another neat trick to enhance the use of this trap is by using a Feather Hat, which will increase the number of birds that will land around the player, speeding up the process. To craft this hat, players will need 3 Jet Feathers (found in Crows), 2 Crimson Feathers (found in Redbirds) and 2 Tentacle Spots with the Alchemy Engine. To get the most out of this item, players should craft as many bird traps as possible to ensure ample resources are caught. When killed, players will receive both a Morsel and a Feather.

Bug Net

While the word Trap is not entirely in the name, this net can be considered a trap to the poor insects fluttering around The Constant. Bug Nets can be an easy craftable with only 4 Twigs, 2 Silk, and 1 Rope, and has up to 10 uses. If players use the nets as a weapon, however, it only has 4 uses.

Nets are useful when trying to catch Bees, Butterflies, Mosquitos and Fireflies. It's a crucial component when making Honey, as bees are required for Bee Boxes, which is a great way to heal. Fireflies are needed for Miner Hats or Pumpkin Lanterns. Butterflies will drop Wings or Butter when killed. The butter is a great ingredient for food items, and the wings will heal the player by 8 points, which is a quick way to get some added health in a pinch. And for Mosquitos, this hostile mob can drop Mosquito sacks which is another healing aid.

Players can also catch Killer Bees, which might be a better alternative to trying to kill them. Capturing hostile insects can be killed for their drops, or even turned to weapons by releasing them on mobs.

Tooth Trap

Not all traps are focused on food, there are some traps that revolve around protecting the player while dealing with the dangerous environment, and the Tooth Trap is just that tool. Tooth Trap can be placed on the ground to deal damage towards mobs. It has a total of 10 uses, but it has to be reset after each use. This item is found under the Fight Tab instead of the Survival Tab. To craft this item 1 Log, 1 Rope and 1 Hound's Tooth, which can be difficult to get all resources for. Hound's Tooth can only be acquired during Hound attacks and visiting the Walrus Camp during Winter

This is a great weapon that can be used to protect a base while in dangerous areas, and if players have these items lying around, it would be smart to have them around their base's perimeter.
