The Last Great TIme War has been a major part of modern Doctor Who, but viewers have barely seen it. It has served as the driving force behind many of the Doctor's actions throughout much of the modern series, and viewers have been able to see its ramifications across the universe. The only time that viewers got a good look at this turbulent time was in the 50th anniversary The Day of the Doctor, and they deserve to see even more. If the show does not do it, then the best option could be a new Doctor Who video game.

Doctor Who has always seemed to struggle in the gaming industry, as the few games it has tried to capture the essence of the show, but faltered. They also all have to work inside the confines of the canon of that iteration of the Doctor, and have to make sure that they do not contradict the larger series. This can severely limit the storytelling potential of these games, but a Doctor Who game in the Time War would not have this issue. It has been relatively unexplored, which means there are so many stories just waiting to be told, and that makes it the perfect backdrop for new games.

The Last Great Time War Explained

Doctor who Day of the Doctor War Doctor

The Last Great TIme War happened between the 1996 TV movieDoctor Who: The Movie and the 2005 reboot. This war helped shape the new version of the character, and it has been a lingering presence for much of the modern series. It was a time when the Doctor could no longer be the Doctor, and he was forced to become a warrior. He was forced to do unspeakable things, and the regenerations after tried their hardest to forget that iteration. Viewers have only gotten hints at the time that the Doctor was at his lowest, and they have been asking for more ever since.

The war itself saw the Time Lords fight the Daleks for the sake of all creation. It lasted for at least 400 years, and it spanned all space and time. Millions of people were killed and brought back to life every single second, and devastation rained down across the universe. The Doctor was forced to take on a new face known as The War Doctor, and he would become an integral part in this war. It would push him to his darkest hour and force him to do something that future regenerations would be haunted by.

Near the end of the Time War, the Daleks had pushed the Time Lords to their homeworld of Gallifrey. It was there that the War Doctor stole a powerful device known as the Moment. He used it to destroy all of Gallifrey, the Daleks, and the Time Lords so that the war would finally stop, and the universe would be saved. The Day of the Doctor altered these events so that all 13 iterations of the Doctor at the time actually saved Gallifrey in a moment of time while destroying the Daleks, but every doctor before the eleventh would not remember this due to the timeline being out of sync.
