However, fans also know that the actor will be accompanied by a brand-new companion known as Ruby Sunday. The Doctor's companions are an integral part of Doctor Who, and many people have flown in the TARDIS alongside The Doctor. Some of these previous companions have passed on and will not be seen again. Doctor Who: 5 Episodes To Rewatch For David Tennant's Return

With Tennant's iconic Doctor returning next year for the show's 60th anniversary, there's no better time to look back on his greatest hits.

As such, there are plenty of previous companions who could bump into the new incarnation of the character in the upcoming series. Some of these companions could be a great way to highlight the legacy of this iconic show, while others have story arcs that are yet to be completed. Either way, it would be great if the show brought back some of these familiar faces.

6 Susan

The First Companion

Doctor Who Susan Foreman Cropped

Susan was the first companion that traveled with The Doctor on the show, alongside her teachers Ian and Barbera. She was introduced to fans as The Doctor's granddaughter and knew much of what he did about the universe. However, this family tie was established long before the show delved deeper into Timelord mythology. Susan is still referenced in the show sixty years on, but she has not appeared on-screen since her departure from the show in 1966.

5 Sci-Fi Movies Inspired By Doctor Who

Doctor Who's influence has reached far and wide for the past 60 years, and these sci-fi movies show how it inspired other media in the genre.

The re-appearance of Susan Foreman would be a great nod to older fans of Doctor Who, while also serving as a platform for new fans to learn about the show's origin. Many companions have taken a spot in the TARDIS since Susan, but few have actually been The Doctor's own flesh and blood.

5 Yasmin Khan

A Character Tied To 13 Who Didn't Get Her Story Resolved

Yasmin Khan appeared in the thirteenth Doctor's first episode as a police officer struggling to be taken seriously in her job. The end of the episode sees Yaz joining The Doctor and two more companions join the new team for the following series, but the character is quickly overshadowed by the other companions, Graham and Ryan. When it came time for these two to leave the show, fans were hoping to see more of Yaz. However, a new companion was quickly brought into the fold, and Yaz's story arc changed to focus on her feelings for The Doctor.

Yaz did get to say goodbye to the thirteenth Doctor before she regenerated, but fans didn't get to see what happened to her after. All the other companions from this time got to join a support group focusing on their time traveling in the TARDIS, but Yaz was not seen as part of this group. Let's hope series 14 checks in on Yaz, so fans can find out what is going on with one of the companions who grew closest to The Doctor.

4 K9

A Robot Dog That Could Work In The Modern Era

K9 is a great inclusion for a sci-fi show like DoctorWho. The robot dog appeared in classic episodes of Doctor Who to act as a faithful and futuristic pet for the Timelord. Sadly, the technology of the robot the show used back in the day was not reliable enough to have the dog around permanently. So many takes were ruined by a malfunctioning K9 puppet.

Doctor Who: 10 Best Fourth Doctor Stories

Tom Baker's tenure as the fourth Doctor Who is legendary among fans. These are some of the fourth Time Lord's best episodes.

However, times have changed since K9 first appeared, and the BBC's deal with Disney+ has given the show a budget that could finally make a companion like K9 work on screen. Russel T Davies is a fan of K9, as shown by his inclusion in the episode School Reunion. Hopefully, another twenty years is enough time to get the technology right to bring K9 back.

3 Martha Jones

One Of 10's Companions Yet To Return

Doctor Who Martha Jones

With Russel T Davies returning to the show, fans have grown to expect him to bring back some iconic characters to the show. He popularized the move in his first go as showrunner when he brought back Rose Tyler in a big role for the series 4 finale, and it came as no shock to fans when it was announced that fan favorite, Donna Noble, would return for the 60th anniversary specials. However, one of the companions from Davie's initial run is yet to receive the same treatment, and that is Martha Jones.

The last fans saw the former companion was when she showed up working for UNIT at the end of series four. The character has a lot more to give, though, and it would be great to see this new version of The Doctor reconnecting with an old friend.

2 River Song

The Doctor's Wife

River-Song-Doctor-Who

This former companion has had one of the most complete story arcs in the show's history. River Song first appears in series four when she meets a version of The Doctor that she does not recognize. It is hinted that the pair have a long and storied history before River sacrifices herself to save the day. Fans continue meeting River Song as it is slowly revealed that she is the daughter of two future companions who are then brainwashed to murder the Timelord. The Doctor and River Song eventually get married before she has to say goodbye to the twelfth incarnation of the hero before starting the cycle over again.

Although River Song has a satisfying arc, she is a hugely popular character in the fan base. What's more, the timey-wimey nature of the character makes it perfectly plausible that River could make another appearance in the show again.

1 Rose Tyler

New Who's Most Important Companion

Christopher Eccleston Ninth Doctor with Rose Tyler

For many Doctor Who fans, Rose Tyler was the first companion they ever saw on screen. The character debuted in the first episode of the show's revival back in 2005 alongside the ninth Doctor, and she stayed in the show for one more season after her original Doctor regenerated. In her time as companion, Rose Tyler got to rejuvenate The Doctor after the Time War, defeat the Dalek emperor by consuming the heart of the TARDIS, live a life in a parallel universe, and even return to defeat the Daleks once more.

Rose Tyler has had a huge impact on the show and is one of the main reasons why the revival led by Russel T Davies worked in the first place. As such, Whovians owe a lot to this companion, and it would be strange not to see her pop up in the 60th-anniversary specials or in the next series of the show.
