Since it made its debut during the Super Bowl, Marvel fans have been discussing the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer nonstop. This is for good reason, as the footage seems to be expanding the MCU in some major ways. Aside from setting up Scarlet Witch as a villain, the Savage Land was seemingly teased alongside the Illuminati, Professor X, and a Captain Marvel variant.

However, one brief frame of the trailer showed what looks to be an animated universe, with many thinking that this will be how Captain Carter from What If…? is introduced. With Captain Carter’s shield hidden on the poster, this seems more likely than not, and it shows just how far Marvel Studios is willing to take its multiverse. If fans really do get to see an animated universe alongside the potential zombie and comic book universes, it is not out of the realm of possibility for standout Marvel games to be shown some love as well.

The Potential of Video Game Cameos in The MCU

comic book video game adaptation history past homages

If a video game character were to ever make an appearance in the MCU, Insomniac’s version of Spider-Man seems like the most likely candidate. The Advanced suit and its signature white spider have quickly become iconic, with many falling in love with the unique design. Likewise, Spider-Man: No Way Home has already shown that multiple Peter Parkers are not something to shy away from, so adding another to the mix could happen.

As for how the video game version of Spider-Man could be worked into the movie-spanning narrative of the MCU, a live action Spider-Verse film is a possibility. This could provide an opportunity to introduce Insomniac’s version of Miles Morales as well, with the video game take on the character giving fans a taste of what a future MCU Miles could be like. With countless Spiders left to introduce, like Spider-Gwen and Spider-Man 2099, the wall-crawler should continue to be focused on while the multiverse shenanigans are playing out.

Though it would certainly be fun to see some MCU characters briefly enter the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, or vice versa, another opportunity will soon present itself with Marvel’s Wolverine. Assuming that Insomniac’s take on Logan becomes as popular as its versions of Peter Parker and Miles Morales, it would be cool to see him appear in the MCU. If he gets a yellow and blue or yellow and brown costume in the game, it would be easy enough to recreate that look for a live action cameo.

The sky is the limit for potential video game references, as more Marvel games are constantly being developed and released. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 set to be the last appearance of the original team, paying homage to the video game versions down the line could create a bittersweet moment for fans. While it is unclear what hero Amy Hennig’s Marvel project will focus on, her past work all-but-ensures that it will be a likable variant that deserves a moment to shine in the MCU.

Obviously, there is no guarantee that video game cameos will ever happen in the MCU. However, with the tease that an animated universe could be explored in the next Doctor Strange film, it seems more possible than ever before. While major roles on par with Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier are unlikely, a brief cameo where Yuri Lowenthal’s Spidey swings by would be a huge moment for Insomniac Games and Marvel fans alike.
