The popular smartphone game Disney Twisted-Wonderland is getting another manga series called Disney Twisted-Wonderland The Comic: Episode of Savanaclaw. The new manga series will be published starting December 18th, in the January 2023 issue of Square Enix's magazine Monthly G Fantasy. The announcement was made in the November issue of the same magazine.
Twisted-Wonderland first became popular in Japan when it launched in 2020. The original designer of the characters and main scriptwriter is Yana Toboso, the mind behind Black Butler. The game garnered immediate popularity in Japan, especially among its target demographic of young women. An English version of the game launched in January 2022, bringing the game to even more people around the world.
Twisted-Wonderland is a game that re-imagines Disney villains from several franchises as bishounen anime boys. You play as Yu, a character who is summoned to a new world by a magic mirror and finds themselves at Night Ravens College. Taken in by the headmaster, you can play through the school meeting the various characters and earning new ones through a gacha game style.
The manga adaptation for Twisted-Wonderland gives these popular anime boys more of a story. Of course, players interact with them in the game and learn more about them the more they level them up and talk to them. But the manga lets the story go even deeper than the mobile game allows, which is why it has gained popularity.
From March 2021 to October 2022, the first manga series Disney Twisted-Wonderland The Comic: Episode of Heartslabyul was also published in Monthly G Fantasy. It followed the Heartslabyul house, based on Alice in Wonderland, from the mobile game story. This new series, Disney Twisted-Wonderland The Comic: Episode of Savanaclaw, will presumably follow the Savanaclaw house, based on The Lion King.
This new chapter of the Twisted-Wonderland manga will be drawn by Suzuka Oda, an artist behind a few other bishounen-style manga. While the publication in Monthly G Fantasy will be in Japanese, Kodansha USA Publishing has already announced they will also publish an English localization.
If the manga continues to be successful, it is likely that other five houses will get their own stories as well. The other five houses are based on The Little Mermaid, Snow White, Hercules,Aladdin, and Sleeping Beauty.
In addition to the manga, an anime was also announced for Disney+ in 2021, and all the rights have been purchased to make and stream it. There is no more current news in regard to that, so Twisted-Wonderland fans will have to make due with playing the game and reading the manga in the meantime.
Disney Twisted-Wonderland The Comic: Episode of Savanaclaw will release on December 18th, 2022.
