It becomes clear early on in Disney Speedstorm that coming first in races won't always be easy. The computer-controlled racers are surprisingly competent even on easier settings, and players will need to use every advantage they can if they don't want to get beat by Mickey Mouse in a racing game. Sometimes the beginning of a race is the most important part, and players can start races off right by getting a huge burst of speed if they complete a short minigame. Once the race starts, understanding how to fill the boost gauge and when to use the manual boost is also very important.

Disney's take on the kart-racing genre is full of recognizable characters, places, and music remixed just enough to make it feel new. Disney Speedstorm players can compete in competitive multiplayer, play local games, or race in circuits through the game's story mode. Regardless of which mode players are taking on, understanding the starting boost and boost gauge can be very helpful.

How to Get a Starting Boost in Disney Speedstorm

disney speedstorm starting boost

At the start of every race in Disney Speedstorm, players are given a chance to get a massive speed burst. This is similar to how other racing games let players get a burst of speed if they start holding the acceleration button early, but requires a bit more finesse. In Disney Speedstorm, players can hold the acceleration button to fill up the meter as shown above. If players have the meter in the green zone when the timer finishes counting down, they will fly ahead of the competition. There's a darker green spot that is smaller which grants an even greater boost.

How to Fill the Boost Gauge in Disney Speedstorm

Now that players are fully in the race, they need to manage their boost gauge. There are five main ways to fill the Boost Gauge, those being drifting, the boost skill, hitting opponents with offensive skills, boost pads, and slipstreaming.

  • Drifting: The boost gauge will fill slowly while the player drifts and get a big chunk when the player releases the drift.
  • Boost Skill: Looks like a lightning bolt. Press to instantly fill the Boost Gauge or charge to get a greater amount over time.
  • Hitting Opponents With Offensive Skills: Any time the player successfully hits an opponent they will get a large chunk of boost gauge.
  • Boost Pads: Driving over boost pads will give the player a burst of speed and fill their boost gauge. It also prolongs an active manual boost.
  • Slipstreaming: If players drive behind another racer, their boost gauge will gradually fill.

Players would do well to keep an eye on the boost gauge and be sure to use it whenever it is full, as this is one of the best ways to catch up with opponents or to stay in the lead. Every character in Disney Speedstorm's starting roster can benefit from this.

Disney Speedstorm is in early access now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
